My theory

I have a theory about purchasing music, and it goes as
follows...

The higher the opportunity cost, the higher the quality of
the listening experience...

now, if you don't know your economics jargon, opportunity
cost is the dollar amount of something you are losing out
on, when you make a purchase or something... so in this
case, buying a cd, the opportunity cost would be the cost of
a new shirt or something...

anyways, what do you think? I made it up as a joke at first,
but I think I really do believe it... the anticipation, the
excitment, spending the money, it all adds to make a better
listening experience... therefore, MP3's suck!!!! :)

Actually, I love your theory, and I know exactly what you
mean. But you still suck.

When paying for college......your theory definetly does NOT
work...

yes yes, you're so right... but my theory is really only
applied to purchasing music, hence the "quality of the
LISTENING experience" part of the theory... :)

I definitly enjoy the "real" CD more than and mp3. I used
to prefer to sample music in mp3 then if I liked it I would
buy the CD. Now I don't even sample I just go to the used
CD store and browse 'till I find something that looks cool
or that I think I may have heard of : )

yeah, I usually buy music without ever hearing it... I'm
always open to experiment with music types, and it's so
great when you come home with an album you've never heard
anything from and put it on and are blown away by it... it's
the whole experience, makes listening to music much better
in my opinion...

I always prefer to buy my music, but I also like using mp3's
to sample something before I buy it, so I don't waste my
hard earned cash

It's like going to a movie without seeing all the trailers.
You don't know what to expect so you're able to jsut sit
back and enjoy it for what it is. There is no preconcieved
notion of what it should be.

would that mean the more you pay for a cd, the better you
think it will be? sounds oversimplified, most domestic cds
pretty much cost the same, every cd costs me about 30-40% a
pair of pants then. but i would not need 200 pairs of
pants, while i do need over 200 cds.

conversely, some people tend to like things that are free.
people will eat food that is free, that they would never pay
for and eat, if they had to pay. i've also known a couple
of guys who burned cds they would probably never buy, would
never really be interested in, but since its almost "free",
they are proud to burn it, like it is a little special bonus
in life, then of course, they never listen to it, but hey,
it was "free"!

I originally thought I was GOING to use MP3s to sample
stuff... but it became so convenient and so CHEAP to just
not buy shit at all. I guess I'd PREFER to have the actual
art/box/booklet/CD, etc, but I think I'll survive without
them.

And college is a WEEEEE bit too expensive for me to worry
about CDs!

hmmm, well I wasn't planning on doing major research based
on this theory... it's just an idea I came up with...

Might sound kind of stupid, but when someone shows me their
cd collection, and it's all actual cd's and not burned, I
gain a bit of respect for them.

yeah I know, it's totally great... and plus, if I buy a cd,
no matter how much I might dislike it after the first
listen, I have more incentive to put time into trying to get
into it, and forcing myself to enjoy it... and I usually
do... I think I've become more open to different styles of
music just because of that... if I had downloaded the MP3's
I probably would've just discarded them if I didn't like
them after the first listen or something...

I used to care about CDs, now I just wonder WHY... why
should paying 20 dollars make you a more viable music fan?
It's all about the music. I don't care if the music comes on
a circular thing made of foil and aluminum, computer code, a
chewable pill, I just don't care, as long as I hear the
SOUNDS. And free stuff is always good. :-)

I dunno... I guess it's the same thing as people sticking
with vinyls after cds became popular... it's what you like
personally...

It could be because the artist would likea little
compensation for spending so much of thier lives to make the
music we listen too. If I heard BoC playing their music on
the sidewalk I'd stop and listen and then i'd throw some
money into their laptop carrying case. Just a thought.

I'd like to support the artist... on the other hand, I'm
evil, and I want a yacht made of gold. BOC will do just fine
without my money.

There'll always be suckers like you to support their drug
habits. ;-p

like that?! ;)

well, 10 years from now, which will be more satisfying....
an actual collection of CDs representing what you liked thru
the years, or a sloppy bunch of burned cds and mp3s of
widely varied quality..?

I'd rather the CDs, of course, but I'd also cringe if I
started hating what I'd bought. It isn't too fun to look
over at my CDs right now and see ALANIS MORRISETTE and GREEN
DAY! ;-)

And personally, I doubt it would matter to me much, anyway.
They're just CDs, with mostly disapointing booklets, and
shitty artwork. I don't think I'll lose sleep when I'm 30
wishing I had the cheap ass ICBYD booklet. :-) As long as I
can hear the album, I'm set, but that's just me. I've never
been one to collect shit anyway, my tastes change too
rapidly.

ya same here ohpecks...
of course i'd rather have the cd.. but to this date ive
d/led like hundreds of dollars (maybe thousands) worth of
albums which i really love (ie aphex), which i could
obviously not afford to buy... and i just want to hear the
music.. (although tearing through the vancum packed plastic
wrap IS pretty fun...)

and then again CDs are much better quality...

I have to agree with you, it is exciting getting a new, real
CD, and I listen to them a lot when I first get them. Also,
when I get MP3's, I only put them on with my computer
speakers, where as with a CD, I listen only with headphones,
which is a lot better.
