Anyone see this movie? I watched part of it in a class today, and I've been really thinking about Gandhi and stuff all day since... I'm fascinated... It's amazing to me that he always stood by his non-violence belief, and it worked... India eventually got their independance... You know, I don't know if anyone has heard of it, but there is a model of needs called Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and it lists the different types of needs... the whole thing is that you have to fullfill the bottom needs before you can move up, with the top being total self-actualization, or total self-fulfillment... anyways, my prof (we learned this in Psychology) told us that Maslow, the guy you made up the list, said that one three people had ever reached the top level in his opinion... Jesus Christ, another person whom I forget, and Gandhi... I found that very interesting...
I'm definately gonna have to watch all of the movie sometime...

could the person whom you forget be Leonarda Da Vinci?
Nietzsche said something similar...well, not "said" as much as inferred, that if people in the past had ever 'gone under' and become Overmen, who he claimed were the next step in mental evolution for us humans, some of those people would have been Jesus and Leonardo Da Vinci

Heh when i was a teen, and i lived in a dorm in the communist Hungary, my cousin found out for me to go to a religious school every thursday nights.
It was fairly boring, but sometimes the old monk showed some videos like a very horrible movie about abortions, etc.
Once they showed the Gandhi movie, and it really impressed me too.
No-one could do the same as Gandhi did.

ugh, thats not what Gandhi would have wanted you to think! :) everyone could take on the same perspectives and outlooks as Gandhi if they chose to...what was it he said? Live the life you want the world to live, or something along those lines? I think he showed us that anybody can change the world, as long as we believe in what we are doing

I just wrote a paper on personal greatness (to inspire myself more than anything); very similar concept to this meeting of the needs heierarchy. I think folks like Ghandi, Jesus, Da Vinci and such are just the ones that we we're taught about. Certainly others that never made it to the books, but probably had profound influence on those in their smaller community and have reached some level of whatever it is that we're discussing. Three is quite the small number. We all have the very same things that allowed these folks to accel. They weren't born any different. That's one of the things that bothers me about Christianity. We are all sinners and Jesus was only special because he was chosen and is the direct son of God, immaculate conception, blah blah woof, therefore we will never reach that level of greatness. What a great spiritual path; does a lot of good for our future. Either he is not actually the direct son of God, or we all are.

Yep, Ghandi was a cool motherfucker. I saw the movie a couple of weeks ago- fuckin awesome. I don't think I would have believed it were it not true!! GW Bush could learn a few things from that guy, to say the least. (as could a lot of other folk). At this point, war is really unnecessary, but people are still too caught up in power games....

'the kingdom of god is all around you...'
(therefore, McDonald's is discracing the kingdom of god, and must be stopped!)
I'm 'in church' every day, all day... all nature is sacred
you know how a lot of folk behave one way during the week, and another way on sunday, in their 'church'? what if the whole world were a church, and every day were sunday?

That's an awesome conection to fame. Far more fun than say, a autograph from a star or something.
Not only is war unnecessary at this point, but the risks involved are becoming greater and greater. Makes me sad. I had a hard time when we first began our war. Still am.

Yeah, when I heard we had a war on, I got pissed! I wanted to round up everone involved, bitch slap them, and say,'you stupid fucking kids! There's more important shit going down than the need for you to wave your cocks at each other! In fact, pretty much EVERYTHING is more important! Sit the fuck down and talk to each other...etc. etc.'

True. It's quite cool to know that the only Indian part of my family actually was connected with the most famous Indian of the 20th century (ever?). Makes me feel....special, for lack of a better word.
War is not always unnecessary, but this "war against terror"... -- notice my cynical use of quation marks

hmmm, well I don't want to start a big flamming session or anything, but Jesus was the son of God yes, but he was also human... now, if you believe the bible, then he never sinned... he was human, and he never sinned... it was his own self control... but again, I don't want to start anything here, but whether you believe Jesus was the son of God or not, he was human, and lived a perfect life according to history and all that... well I guess the only history is the bible... ah well, whatever you believe... :)

yeah I admire him... quite the person... another thing I noticed in the small part of the movie I saw was that he accepted all people, and all religions... the part where he's with Martin Sheen showing him his place, and he shows him the tent and says all the religions represented... that's how we need to be, more accepting of differences...

Funkmaster, I agree with everything you said, and I believe in God. But whether or not there is a God or that Jesus was his son is not the issue I was adrressing. My impression is that the Bible makes it very clear that Jesus was exclusive, when in fact we all have the abilities that he realized. I don't think that we should look to Christ to save us from our sins when we could very well join him in his greatness, like a brother, not a father. Like you said, it was his own self control. He may have been blessed with a great vision of purity, but the time has come to realize that for oursleves. It's only a matter of will. If Jesus is the son of God than so is everyone and we shouldn't pretent that he was born any more special than us. That's only an excuse for our own denials. We all have the same potential as Jesus and the message that I recieve from Christians is not that I can reach Christ consciousness, but that I should look up to Christ as higher than myself.
Now, this is just the popular message I recieve from Christians, many of who are very confused and grasp onto christianty more out of fear than the disire to know God and the mystical experience of life, so I respect that you probably have a clearer vision than the one that people often try to drop on me, so I'm not talking about you in particualar. I have no problems with the religion of Christ because he is one of my role models, I just think that most Christains never actually took the message of Christ to heart, and I also recognize that the Bible has been rewritten multiple times and likely truth was a little bit obscured when the texts were originally written. In fact, I don't know if I've been at conflict you here. Peace.
