well. its only the end of the interview, but still, the rest i think has already been said before..
Despite this penchant for dark and sombre moods, it's surprising to hear Cunningham would rather make a music video for a band like Led Zeppelin. "I like loads of different music," he explain, "it just happens that if you want to be experimental with the form. there's not alot of music that allows you to do that so, obviously, the main reason I've worked with people like Richard (Aphex Twin) and Squarepusher is because their music is experimental. In order for me to be experimental I need to work with experimental music, it doesn't mean that's all I listen to, that's just what suits my ideas best. I'd much rather sit down and listen to Led Zeppelin".
Whilst that opportunity may have passed, Cunningham says he came close to making a video for '90s inder-rock legends Pavement. Though, as he explains, the genre of music seems to have been one of the reasons it never happened. "There's something more cinematic about doing videos for electronic music because it's closer to being film music; soundtracks. As soon as you have a band, it feels like a music video. I suppose it's justt easier for people to do things that are cinematic with instrumental music."
Cunningham has an answer for this conundrum; he's now making his own music. "I make my own music now and for the last five years I've been studying music and working on my own music project so most of my ideas I want to save for my own project." Put simply, he says there just isn't music that exists for the visual ideas he has.
More surprisingly, he's making rock music. Does Cunningham think people will be surprised by this? "Yeah I do. Because people just assume that, because I made videos for Aphex and that's where I made my name, I think people will just assume I'd be dumb enough to go and make music like him."

Heh. If he really wanted to "experiment", he could actually try to work with other forms of music.

Much has been made of the link between sight and sound. In the 16th century a group of Lutherans ran through churches destroying paintings and statues depicting holy scenes and characters. They did this, some argue, believing that God, in the beginning said we had his word and it was his word that we must follow, not images and idols. The perception also exists that it's much harder to block your ears than close your eyes. Despite these obvious handicaps in human perception, director Chris Cunningham has forged new ground in music videos, and film itself creating visual feasts that not only enhance music, but rival it in meaning and feeling.
If you're not too weak of stomach, it's next to impossible to turn away from a Cunningham video. His new video adventure, Rubber Johnny, is turning the audio-visual world on its head by releasing a short film in the same way a music producer releases a single. To Cunningham however, this doesn't seem strange at all.
"That's a good analogy," Cunningham says of the comparison to a music single, "Hopefully, because of DVD, it means that you can put things out that don't have to be a feature film, you can put small things out on DVD."
Nonetheless, Cunningham refuses to consider the concept an unusaul idiea. "It's interesting," he says considering the argument, "I suppose if it's put out and nobody buys it, I might be able to answer that question and say there's no point putting that sort of thing out unless it's a release for another artist. But I think the Director's Label thing I did with Michel (Gondry) and Spike (Jonze) proved that people are interested in work done by filmmakers as well as musicians."

In fact, Cunningham is quite annoyed by the suggestion releasing a short on DVD, on a music label (Warp records), is unusual. He sternly explains his position, "I see bands putting out backstage footage, bands I've never heard of, putting out backstage footage on DVD. I'm pretty certain you couldn't be bothered asking that question because there'll be so many different things coming out on DVD. The question is, if I make a six minute short with Aphex Twin, I've got two choices: I can either not release it or release it; which do you think is the best to do? You might as well release it, right?"
I start to fell as though I might hae been one of those Lutherans tearing down priceless and beautiful artwork. If you think about it, and anyone who knows Cunningham's work would be sure to agree, there's no reason why a filmmaker can't release a short in the same way music singles are released. And Rubber Johnny is proof of this.
Just disturbing enough to make you cringe yet jaw-droppingly captivating enough to keep you watching, Rubber Johnny is a small look at a deformed, cellar-dweeling boy who twists and contorts his wheelchair-bound physical affront, giving you insight to his mental anguish. It's dark and brooding, as is typical of Cunningham's work, combing special effects and human oddities with a soundtrack by Aphex Twin to which Rubber Johnny rhythmically makes his mark. Cunningham, however, doesn't see his work as necessarily dark. "I don't think the Bjork video is dark," he retorts, referring to his video for Bjork's All is Full Of Love in which two Bjork-like robots re-enact the most sensual of human acts. I suggest, at the very least it's quite melancholy. "I guess so," he replies.

Because people just assume that, because I made videos for Aphex and that's where I made my name, I think people will just assume I'd be dumb enough to go and make music like him." One wonders what kind of of twisted rock will come from the same mind that created the Rubber Johnny character while a young teenager at school. But this is the secret to Cunninghams ability to stay ahead of the others, his ability to maintain the imagination of a child. "From a work point of view it's my priority,"he says, "to keep myself in a similar state of mind to when I was 11. It's obviously difficult as you get older but you have to try".
And while we wait for the twisted music, we can marvel at the twisted deformity of Rubber Johnny and wonder where we can run when you can't close your eyes or your ears.
