Quills are sharp-pointed, fitted with microscopic barbs,
and expand on contact with warm flesh. Muscle contractions
in a quill victim work the quill deeper, as much as an inch
per day unless quills are removed promptly.

Ow.

Our dog got a few quills in it's nose (I wasn't born yet or
too young to remember personally), I hear it's a big ordeal
to get them out because they are barbed. But I wonder how
sharp are they? How do they puncture so easily? Is it just
because the dogs aren't smart enough to back away after they
feel it's sharp?

Maybe the dogs continue to attack because some sort of "heat
of passion" kicks in and it feels the need to continue the
attack until the advisary is dead?

:? dunno
