Public Image ltd.- Careering
Mission of Burma- some song early on Vs. possibly Trem
Two... the chorus is "Where did things go wrong?"... yeah
that's probably the only MoB song that i really like a lot.
James Chance and the Contortions- Design to Kill
the Pop Group- She is Beyond Good and Evil
This Heat- hmm... maybe Music Like Escaping Gas (most This
Heat is amazing though)
Gang of Four- Natural's Not in it
the Raincoats- Only Loved at Night

grrr... i have to go now...
other stuff you might want to look into
the Slits
Liliput
the Fall (never been a fan myself, but i'm sure that will
change someday)
Konk
Liquid Liquid
Caroliner (this is an insane stretch)
23 Skidoo
A Certain Ratio
blah blah blah... maybe next time i won't give you a list
that's so bloody token...

* 23 Skidoo
* A Certain Ratio
* Au Pairs
* Automatic Pilot
* Bauhaus - Also considered progenitors and members of
the massively influential goth rock style.
* bIG fLAME
* Big Black
* The Birthday Party
* The Blood Brothers
* The Boredoms
* Cabaret Voltaire - Also considered early pioneers of
industrial music specifically, and electronic music in
general.
* The Chameleons
* Crass - Crass adhered so strongly to the punk ethos,
regularly eschewing popularity or accessibility, that they
cannot be contained by the label of punk. Their music, while
bearing little in common with other post punk bands, was
still an unwavering attempt to take punk music to the next
level.
* The Cure - Like Bauhaus, The Cure are considered
progenitors and members of the massively influential goth
rock style.
* Cultural Amnesia
* Depeche Mode
* Devo
* The Durutti Column
* Echo & the Bunnymen
* Einstürzende Neubauten
* Essential Logic
* Factrix
* Fad Gadget
* The Fall - The Fall's music changes drastically in
"phases" designed primarily by a shifting emphasis of
leadership. However, their music remains consistently post
punk throughout their career.
* The Feelies
* The Fire Engines
* Firehose
* Flying Lizards
* Fugazi
* Gang of Four
* Gene Loves Jezebel
* Happy Mondays
* The Human League - Perhaps better known for their more
accessible music, which is described as New Wave, and not
post punk.
* Hüsker Dü
* insane picnic
* Interpol
* Josef K
* Joy Division - While not really conected with the
Gothic rock scene, many acknowledge Joy Division to be the
first Gothic rock band
* Killing Joke
* The Lemon Kittens
* Magazine - Straddling the line between post punk and
New Wave, Magazine was formed by the remains of the early
punk legends Buzzcocks.
* The Mekons
* The Minutemen
* Mission of Burma
* Monte Cazazza
* New Orde

post punk is a bit of an old school phrase, used more in the
late eighties. usually it was music that was dark, abrasive
but with a pop sensibility as well, guitar-centric but more
developed and polished and stylized than punk. most
strictly speaking post punk was late seventies to early
eighties, by the late eighties most bands either turned
poppier or disbanded.

the new wave of new wave is just new wave revivalism, i
think.

there's a little crossover, but new wave tended to be
lighter, more fashion conscious, more synthesizer driven.

new wave: gary numan, devo (circa 1980), the human league,
etc

at least, that's how i remember it going down.

offline OK on 2005-07-15 12:49 [#01664126]

ok. i get it. tho it doesn't make any sense.

post punk has nothing to do with punk at all. why not coin a
name for itself.

lots of post punk bands used to be punk bands, it evolved
out of various punk scenes...

also, labels are made up by journalists, not bands
generally. how else would a label as idiotic as idm be
coined?

The Durrutti Column, I was listening to them earlier,
they/he's been one of my favourites for the last 15 years.
They put the avant-garde jazz classical into post-punk.
NICE.

however, i have access to about 7000 cds and about 5000 lps

a problem..i just need some pointers :)

i suppose there was a time when "punk" implied a certain
historical context, 1975 to early eighties. now there have
been so many revivalists and imitators and reinventions that
the original reference is made more obscure.

i've never made any punk rock, i started out making post
punk. ; )

Post punk artists i recommend

The sound can be quite deppresing to listen to because its
kind of dark but they also got alot of raw power in there
music
check out there two first albums Jeopardy and From The Lions
Mouth or these tracks:I Cant Escape My
Self,Winning,Unwritten Law

The chameleons they are way more lightheaded and got lovely
melodies.Albums to check is What Does Anything Mean?
Basically or Strange Times.Tracks:Perfume Garden,P.S. Good
bye,Swamp Thing

Associates i love the singers voice he almost sing like they
do in a opera.They are also quite glomy.Album to check is
Sulk.Tracks:Party Fears Two,Club Country,White Car In
Germany

Monochrome Set, Pylon, The Passions, Nightingales, I've got
all it shared illegally.

Post punk would be stuff like Tortoise, Godspeed You Black
Emperor, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky... key words are
usually plodding, grandiose, layered, crescendos, climax,
etc. Not my kind of thing, usually.

yes i like some..but there are just way too many bands doing

those i named above are the ones i like quite a bit. well,
sigur ros and mbv are my fav on that list.

Post punk would be stuff like Tortoise I mean post
ROCK, obviouthly

I never considered MBV post-rock but you have a point, they
do fit. I like stuff like Pram and Stereolab, with some
humor and wit... a lot of post-rock I've heard is joyless,
uncharismatic stuff. Piano Magic is good too.

i have hard time understanding why the only Durutti Column
album i really love is Live at the Venue... i've listened to
most of the albums from which these songs of this set come
from, but for some reason i seem to enjoy this one a lot
more... i think it's probably because the sound is a lot
more ghetto, and softened than it is on all the remasters...
his voice and guitar just sound better to me when they are
hovering in hiss and distance...
