School Prefects

Did anyone have friends at school who were pretty OK maybe
even cool, and then they became Prefects and everything
changed and they didn't seem so OK any longer and it seemed
as if that little taste of power had turned them?

Xltronic = School

Moderators = Prefects

Some friends who became prefects remained OK btw.

Shane - I don't know, is there? Probably in private schools.

would this be the same as an RA at a college dorm?

basically someone who is in charge (and a student) of a
certain dorm area and has to make sure no funny business is
going on.

Weakling Child - obviously not all schools have prefects -
the school I attended had prefects but don't be fooled into
thinking it was a classy establishment - we had our minks,
too

I was a Prefect (as well as head of house) in school, so
your theory about prefects = moderators is at least partly
true.

However, I had loads of mates and used to get into trouble
all the time in school, never went to lessons, used to go to
the pub at lunchtime, etc. I never 'prefected' peers (that
would be dickish), merely the little kids who were being a
nuisance. I suppose the 'trolls' of the real world... I was
about as far removed from your stereotypical prefect as you
could imagine.

You're right though, some people who were made prefects, the
power went to their heads and they used it without
discression and I found myself liking them less and less. I
found this more true of the girls than the boys. Even our
head boy used to regularly join in our rucks with rival
schools.

Genuine LOL.

I suppose underage drinking and nailing the lovelies from
the girls school down the road is par for the course at Eton
nowadays :)

I never really get on with public school kids (Americans,
that means private schools here, funnily enough), with a
couple of exceptions. When I lived in Bristol I knew a lot
of them and for the most part, they were superficial, false
and you never really felt they were letting their guard down
and you were getting to know them.

Still: A member of the School rowing club, Fencing, Playing
the Violin and regular school assemblies at the local
cathedral- it may as well have been public school. I really
do chuckle when I see my life on paper and imagine the
preconceptions people must have of me based on that. As
those here who've met me in real life will confirm, I'm a
lot more down to earth.

Yep you seem like a nice guy - but you're right, sometimes
when written down your life looks like the perfect
upper-middle-class existence of the old days :p

And in spite of that, I grew up in a dilapidated house with
no carpets on the floors (bare concrete floors in some
rooms), in a welsh ex-docking town, with a crippled
economy.

Still, bettering yourself is nothing to be ashamed of, what
what?

So how come your upbringing and your bearing seem so
incongruous? I wouldn't say it was anything about
'bettering' oneself because I don't think the old middle
classes and above are better than the working class.

Quality!

Unfortunately that picture is now out of date. The "head

'proper' bike jacker. The bike looks rather different now
and my hair has been cut shorter.

We were fairly poor when I was a little kid, no family car,
hand me down clothes, etc. But both my parents were well
educated (particularly in a literary sense), so I suppose
that has rubbed off on me.

When I say 'bettering', I don't mean better in a morally
superior sense: I'm going for a job interview tomorrow with
a view to being an expert witness for a company who defend
people who are as guilty as sin. That's certainly 'worse'
than someone who sweeps the streets. I mean better as in
'better educated' and happier because of it, both in terms
of my mental capacity to enjoy life and also through being
able to find interesting work. I've done manual labour in
the past and whilst it's certainly "honest work", it bores
me.

A lot of the kids at the high school I went to were a lot
better off than me and from posh families, so again, I
suppose their mannerisms, habits and tastes have all
influenced mine.

I think the quality of the jacket concerned is up there with
the infamous purple trousers. When I'm rich and famous, I'll
auction it off and use the proceeds to buy MP3 players
loaded with IDM for 3rd world orphans.

So would you say your family were more inclined to the
Middle Class ethos? That's what I was trying to fathom. By
that, I'm asking whether your parents had jobs that were
menial or unskilled or involved labour (plumber, sparky,
driver etc).
