I don't think bruce lee invented it all, but to say that he
wasn't a martial artist clearly demonstrates ignorance. read
his book and watch the documentaries about him. he was a
true martial artist and he clearly had one of the most
diverse martial art backgrounds as he'd practiced just about
any form of martial art before his death. There are few
alive today (and fewer alive before) who could've beaten him
in a fair match.

I said that in the way someone disses someone they don't
respect by saying 'he ain't even...' I've seen the films,
documentaries, and read his books and it isn't so impressive
- he popularised the kungFu film in the West, so the West
hail him as the best - a common error they make [see the
ebbulient praise for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon].

He was a film star first and foremost. The real ones live in
monasteries and amongst the common folk and, though I don't
like this 'oh he could have beaten the whole world and her
grandma' attitude, I'm fairly confident that these people
would have wiped the floor with him.

you need to see some really amazing martial arts films! you
have to watch the same few moves over and over just to make
out what they're doing. Its unbelievably fast!

usually the films with the worst covers and overdubbing have
the best martial artists :)

I have little doubt that a shaolin monk (once again the
popularization, but in this case there is a reason why this
particular monastery became famous) could beat him in a pure
kung-fu fight, but remember that bruce not only pracitced
kung-fu.. he also did (nevermind my spelling of these, I
don't know the true one as it differs from place to place)
tae kwon-do, karate, aikido, judo, jui jitsu, boxing, muay
thai, and his own Jeet Kune Do (Jun Fan).. there's probably
some more too... diversity is always better, which is why I
find that "regular" kung-fu (wing chun) seems pretty
superior to (shotokan) karate for instance.. of course it'd
depend on the practicioners, but the more diverse kung-fu
just seems to stand a better chance against the at times
rigid karate. Too bad most sports fights these days are
"same art" fights and they rarely mingle (at least not on
sports channels) so seeing a real match between the two
would be down to finding some good practicioners 'round here
and setting up a match... I don't think I'll do that...

..as long as you acknowledge he was more than a movie-star
(he did actually have his own school and he did work his way
back from a broken back and a "you'll never walk" to
complete recovery)...

the mixed martial arts fights on tv are just brawls, between
brutes and even bigger brutes...

haha! do you doubt my skills in kung-fu movie watching? I've
spent many hours at a vcr rewinding and step-playing in my
lifetime, and I've enjoyed every second of it! Kung-fu
movies rock, and the sport itself also rocks! I wish I'd had
the money to start practicing when I was younger...

the only mixed martial arts fights I've seen are those "no
particular style" fights with one guy doing thai and one
doing karate, and they're both really just built for boxing.

oh, and I agree on that about people praising things like
chrouching tiger for being "ground-breaking" when there are
soooooo many other good wuxia movies out there before this!
fortunately, the succses of crouching tiger made
dvd-releases if other and older wuxia more easily
accessible...

Yes I said I know about him - It seems you don't know
Shaolin Kung Fu because it covers all the other martial
arts, which are eventual derivatives. It is pure and
therefore unsullied and all-powerful.

one of my my favourite bruce lee shots is still when he
kicks the lightbulb out in way of the dragon. classic.

I know shaolin, but those other arts i mentioned have
nothing to do with kung-fu (except for wing chun.. I think
he branched out into other kung-fu arts than this too, but
I'm not sure). Aikido, judo, jui jitsu and Karate developed
independently in Japan. Tae Kwon-do developed from the
koreans wanting to kick samurais off their horses, muay
thai.. I don't know much about muay thai.. I don't find it
nice to look at, but that could be me... Jeet kune do was a
synthesis of all the arts bruce knew, and he held kung-fu
highest, so of course there's lots of kung-fu in it.

The source of all of these is the earliest Kung Fu I think
you'll find - since it includes the throws of Judo and the
hits of Karate etc etc. It even includes boxing and that's
mainly a western pursuit!

considering the likelyness of two separate people developing
the same moves to counter a move and the fact that the
japanese arts developed before they'd gotten into real ocean
travel and most likely not reached china yet plus the early
japanese dislike of foreign things I think it's pretty safe
to assume that most japanese martial arts' origins have
nothing to do with chinese martial arts. martial arts all
developed from simple regular people devising ways to
protect themselves from attackers and were only put into
system later.

I don't want to be arguing the toss all day, but there are
links between all the arts of the Far East -- and Shaolin
Kung Fu is the earliest documented martial art. Next you'll
be saying that the Religions of the Far East aren't related!
And Shaolin Kung Fu was first taught to the Buddhist Monks
to aid their practice!

Superb actor, horribly underrated. He was so convincing in
his brief part in Executive Decision. Just ultra.

The Final Option for SNES is an awesome game.

I took karate when I was younger. When I am confronted I
like to warn the opponent that I am a black belt and they
better be prepared.

However good Bruce Lee was I'm sure there is someone around
that is/was an even better fighter and more than a match -
but how will you ever know? He's dead, and wouldn't fight
them even if he was alive - so it's a pretty pointless
conversation really, which begs the question why I'm
bothering to contribute.

I admire Lee's philosophies though, it's true that he broke
the mold in that his system was to have no system - ie. use
everything available to him to win a fight, even biting. And
of course he was a true martial arts teacher, fighter,
competitor, Jackie Chan is more of a stunt man.
