I guess this is tired and hackneyed, and speaking as a tat-less guy, but I'd only say that a Tat should be something personal, not some vague tribal squiggle or the Hebrew spelling of "kumqwat". If you don't know what to have, I'd say don't have anything. A friend of mine once picked what he thought was a rad design out of a tat shop. later turned out to be the logo of some Surf wear company. Dreadful business. |

Do NOT get a tribal tattoo, i can't think of anything more dated!!! Getting a tribal is like getting the whole backstreet boys catalogue of albums! get something your own, something original! here's some tips: 1) nothing written, anything written that's cool today might be NOT next year already! even your name ( there might come a time where you have to change your name!!! 2) nothing trendy (tribal 5 years ago) what's trendy now is not tomorrow!!! 3) get something that means something to YOU! not something that everybody can understand!!!! all of my tattoos have been painted, designed by myself which means that they are an original which means NO ONE else has them! before you get a tattoo think about what ever your getting for at least a year! Finally think think think thinkthink think think, before you do! everyone has a tattoo nowadays so the coolest thing is almost not to get a tattoo unless you follow the tips above! |

also, think about WHERE you get the tattoo, meaning what are you going to be when you grow up! don't get a tatto somewhere everybody can see like your forehead or your hands! even though you THINK that you're going to be a rockstar that doesn't have to work a day of his/her life! so get a tattoo that doesn't show if you're wearing a t-shirt! then you might have a chance of getting a job even though you have a tattoo that says heil hitler or suck my cock on your body! |

i agreed with nurse until that last post - shut up, you... don't get something impersonal off the wall - get something that means something to you. tribal tattoos were a fad from ten years ago and i wouldn't recommend that. also don't get any emo tattoos - stars and birds and stupid shit like that. everyfuckingbody has those and they all look stupid. i'd say you should just draw a picture of lily barking, "THAD ALLEN SMOYER!" on your arm with a sharpie and pretend it's a tattoo. it will totally trick your dog. |

tribals tattoos are the most ugly and impersonal things you can get. it's just to look "cool". do yourself a favour and save your money and spend it on your wife :) or just pick something that has a real meaning for you. |

i don't see what the big deal is with people 'needing' some personal 'meaning' to a tattoo. to each their own. what if you want to get something that doesn't mean anything in particular? does that make you less of a person? no, i dont think so. i have two tattoos, and neither of them mean anything in particular, but they are pretty timeless to me (ie. not having any particular reference to a band or person or logo). and yes, one of them is chinese characters, and yes ive gotten them confirmed and yes i am chinese and yes i am a nihilist. so i dont have any personal attachments to my tattoos - they are just designs that went onto my skin at the time that i decided to have them inked. nothing more, nothing less. |

also, recycle: one thing you can try doing is create your own tribal design. just do something random yet simple (for the tattooist to design, so it looks clean on your skin and not fucked up), and make a couple of variations of it. if in doubt and worried about perfect curves/lines, use something like adobe illustrator to get the vector graphic precision. when you create something on your own, you may feel a little more 'unique' in the sense that there would be very few people with the same design that you thought up. also, create or find something that can be expanded or changed very easily (assuming you want to expand on the design in the future, or may want to change this one slightly). for instance, you could make something that has a couple of wandering swirls, and you can always add to those swirls later - or you can create something in a box/rectangle (which mine is in), where you can add other boxes or shapes around it, etc. maybe avoid the 'centrality' designs, b/c that usually ends up being too restrictive. do something uneven, maybe leaning more towards the right or left, or whatever. |
