I recently picked up some Sennhieser HD250s closed cans and
tested it using Oren Ambarchi's Suspension. I didn't know
you could experience bowel-shaking base from such small
speakers! Then I went and got an Ultrasone Proline 550.
Same rich low end but with significant increase in clarity
and detail across the spectrum. Now I'm seriously thinking
of getting the Proline 750 despite the $400 price tag. Has
anyone else experienced these headphones? What do you
personally use? Is there any other brands of comparable
quality you know of?

BTW I'm researching the answers on the web but I'd rather
get the opinions of experienced people on this messageboard.

I have the ultrasone hfi 650s, and they're great, and
ultrasone makes good stuff.

hifi-auditioning; "Diana Krall - live in paris" is the #1
album for this...

Weird, in looking at headphones, I didn't come accross this
brand, they look nice, but haven't heard them before. If
you're going to spend $400, I see the 2500's for that much

I would recommend

Beyerdynamic DT 880

and

Sennheiser 600 or 650

The 2500 model is quite nice. I think it's the Proline 750
open version. The reason I decided to get Proline Series is
that the transducer is aimed toward the outer ear and not
the ear canal which creates the perception of surrond sound.
I want find music that has a great sense of space so I can
experience this feature to the fullest. Maybe it's about
time I picked up some Stockhausen?

Forgot about getting an amp. What does it do besides
increasing volume? The level on my cd player is good enough
and I don't want to damage my ears.

Some headphones are hard to drive (particular models of
Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic and AKG) so they need to hook up to
a Headphone AMP. But if you have an easy to drive set of
cans then you don’t need an AMP, hooking them up to your
portable CD player is fine. The inexpensive Grado headphones
are the best sounding and can easily be driven from portable
CD players. I have the Grado Alessandro MS-1 they are
exactly like the Grado SR 125 but cost $40 cheaper, but they
are only available to some parts of the world. If you
can’t acquire a pair of MS-1's then Get the Grado SR-80,
they cost $95US

Yeah, I've heard that Grados have the best definition
around. Don't think they can match the amount of bass of the
Highend Beyers or Ultrasones though.

I have Grado SR60's myself, I'm gonna go to bed and listen
to SAW2 with the headphones, and just for the notice, The
BASS is amazing.

yeah, lots of distortion/clipping on saw2.

try listening to different types of music, from different
periods of time.

listen to some 60s/70s recordings, it's amazing what you can
hear in some good headphones.

but also listen to some recent recordings, maybe
plastikman's 'closer' as it is all about fucking with ur
head/ears.

i have senn HD 265, bit expensive but they sound fucking
great!!

BUT if you have good headphones plug it to an amp, because
the mini amp of cd player is not very good ; i listens to
analord on good rec player + amp + sennhd265 & the analords
sounds fucking great.
