Grammar Nazis

There's a couple of things I would like to clear up. First
off, one thing that severely grates on my nerves is when
people misuse homophones and homonyms. Like...when they use
the incorrect "they're/their". Question: Does this annoy
anyone else? Question 2: Does this qualify me as a grammar
nazi or simply as a person with a grammar conscience?

The only grammer nazi's I used to know were elite kids in
teenchat rooms.

Hah, good job. I laughed and told my girlfriend what you
said. Because I keep her updated on the xl topics. And
because that was funny. I hereby revoke my "asshead" comment
of you in the Sad. thread.

Probably does qualify you as a grammar Nazi, or, more
generally, a word queen. But I'm probably one myself.

I appreciate that. However, I must admit that I agree with
you - I don't like the misuse of the English language.

community news & advert magazine distrubuted around house's
in my neighbourhood, and just scanning through in a few
minute's i found no less than fifteen rogue apostrophie's.
it was such a joke. yeah it also pisses me off when people
don't know there homophones.

lack of repsect 4 grammer makes me mad 2. Although it seems
hypocritical coming from me because I'm a poor type-guy and
I don't read my posts before I click the button. Improper
use of your/its/their boils my blood too, but the worst is
when someone says that they ''could care less''. Seems to me
that they're implying that they're caring at least a little
bit. Be a man and don't care at all.

I dispise bad grammar.

I've been shot down severely by people here for correcting
the little things that annoy me especially. Things that
really get me:

1) Use of "alternate" in the place of "alternative".
Americans seem to be the main perpetrators of this, but
their heavy abuse of the word is causing it to spread.

2) Rogue apostrophes. I once saw "She buy's ..... "

3) Actually, fuck it: American English in general.
Especially when they turn nouns into verbs. Verbing
weirds language

4) People using "presently" when they mean "right now, in
the present".

5) It's not common, but one of my friends used to say "how
much" for everything -- even multiples of items, instead of
"how many".

:D!

So there you are now there they were, when all was over
again, the four with them, setting around upin their judges'
chambers, in the muniment room, of their marshalsea, under
the suspices of Lally, around their old traditional tables
of the law like Somany Solans to talk it over
rallthesameagain. Well and druly dry. Suffering law the
dring. Accourting to king's evelyns. So help her goat and
kiss the bouc. Festives and highajinks and jintyaun and her
beetyrossy bettydoaty and not to forget now a'duna o'darnel.

Enough of the Joyce-hijacking!

On topic: I do get annoyed by sloppy grammar, spelling and
literacy, but I don't complain about it because people will
always be twats. Plus I make mistakes myself so I'd just
sound like a bigger hypocrite than I already do :)

I also try to capitalise properly, and stear clear of
abbreviations most of the time (though some are usefull). I
mean, honestly, it's not a fucking text message is it? And
just how much longer is it really going to take to type the
extra couple of letters?

Also also, I dislike the American "I could care less". This
implies that it's possible for you to care less and
therefore you must care. It makes Americans look stupid. er.

It's strange, since over here we all say "I couldn't care
less". I'd never come across the mofos saying that before.

I was racking my brain trying to think of this one when I
was writing my post, since it's another example of a
homophone misuse - writing "here, here" when "hear, hear" is
meant.

I get annoyed by it, yes, but by right only when the errors
are in norwegian and/or people actually should know
better. now, I probably make mistakes in english myself, but
as I see it people who aren't natively english speaking
should be excused a bit.

with all respect Sir, i studied english [including
linguistics] for 3 years. and quit it when i realised i'd
been learning more the theory and history of english than
actually the language itself - and wasting my time.

however, linguistics was the most interesting subject for me
then - maybe because of the lecturer who was an interesting
person.

as for your kind linking : yes, i'm for descriptive
linguistics.

sorry for any mistakes in this post.

LAZY_TITLE

To affect something is to change or influence it, To
effect something is a rather formal way of saying `to make
it happen'. Confusingly, either may produce an 'effect' or
result. ('An affect' is a technical term in psychology.)
