my mate has lent me one of his old laptops while i am
staying in his because he didnt want me breaking his 'good'
computers. its a 15.3" screen with a resolution of
1600x1200 which seems really mad because everything looks
tiny

what resolution do you work at?

I work at 1600x1200 on a 19"

I don't know if you mate has changed the resolution on his
laptop or whatever, but LCD-displays only have one
resolution. All other "resolutiong" ol LCDs do nothing to
change the pixels, it just enlarges or shrinks elements
(which often makes things blurry). try to find the native
resolution of the screen. if it is indeed 1600x1200, it's
not good to change it, and if it is 1024x768, it should be
set to that and nothing else for better reproduction of
images and such.

it shows up in the settings as digital flat panel (1600 x
1200) and if i lower the resolution to 1024x768 the screen
goes kind of blurry.

then it's probably native at 1600x1200 although that doesn't
really make sense for such a small screen.

anyway, there is some sort of "codename" thingie for each
resolution, and if you can find these letters, it'll be easy
to figure out.

copy'n'paste ACTION

XGA (1024x768)
SXGA+ (1400x1050)
UXGA (1600x1200)

Some of the latest notebooks feature a 16:10 ratio
wide-aspect display. The associated resolutions include: -

WXGA (1280x800)
WXGA+ (1440x900)
WSXGA+ (1680x1050)
WUXGA (1920x1200)

XGA = Extended Graphics Array
SXGA = Super XGA
UXGA = Ultra XGA
"W" Prefix = Wide
WVA = Wide Viewing Angle

If I could I would have my monitors set at 1280 x 1024, but
unfortunately my second monitor won't work properly at that
setting so I have to settle for 1024 x 768

ok. then you'd be best off leaving it at 1600x1200. I like
it like that.. gives lots more space to work on, but I see
that it could be a problem on a 15"...

that's a crazy resolution.

me: 1024x768 for windows, 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 for games.
