Although less known by mainstream folks, the word VJ is also
used to represent video performance artists who create live
visuals on all kind of music. It originates from a parallel
with DJs, although most VJs nowadays have more to do with
musicians than with DJs. Often using an analog vision mixer,
VJs blend and superimpose various inputs over clips. In
recent years, musical instrument makers have begun to make
specialty equipment for VJing. Popular hardware include the
Edirol V4, Pansonic MX & AVE series mixers and Korg's
Entrancer effects unit. The evolution of computers has
allowed for VJ-specific programs to be produced and has
allowed for easier accessibility to the art form.

I came across a site once that had like a bajillion freeware
vj'ing programs, all on a badly designed webpage

I downloaded a shitload of stuff but I haven't had the need
to do anything with it yet, (and up until recently I didn't
have the space)

ah. sorry for my ignorance then...

we call that "videoartist" (which would mean the same in
norwegian and english).

maybe you'd be interested in that amazingly weird graphic
mixer thingie that someone posted once.. I couldn't find it
by searching (and god damn, I've made lots of threads with
the word "mixer" in them.. didn't notice until now), but
maybe someone knows what I'm talking about.. it was a
video-projector and a plate with some sensors and some small
round thingies.. and then the sensor sensed where those
thingies were and transmitted some midi data to a computer
and... well, it just looked amazingly great!

also I remember something from last saturday when I went to
see common and razhel at that isle of mtv stuff... they had
a room which at first just showed those annoying things that
are before and after the commercials on mtv, but after there
were two guys doing some mashup of lots of pop songs, and
there was one guy on turntables and one on a laptop with
some video.. the video followed the tunes being mashed and
they also followed every scratch.. however, what I think
they were doing was that the one guy on the turntables only
had final scratch and was doing stuff with that while the
laptop guy was queueing up songs and videos and then the
scratch guy controlled their progress and faded between them
and stuff.. they probably had a custom-made program if final
scratch (or something similar) doesn't do that already...
they flashed their web-address on the screen a few times,
but I can't remember what it was.. they were maybe
called eclectic methods, but I can't be sure...

I don't really wanna VJ myself (maybe sometime in the
future) I just like watching those vj movies. for example.
pfanfinderfrei did a collab with Modeselektor. they made a
dvd with visuals on music. I'm more searching for that kind
of stuff.
