Of course I would care. It`s called empathy, man. The little thing that differs us from, let`s say, dogs.

We're more than strangers here, ofcourse there are some who wouldn't mind or care if one of us died but the fact is that we have shared information about our feelings, lives, wants etc. this means that there is a bond between us all; also with talk of xltronicon 06 how can we not have empathy for people we're about to meet and know somthing about. I suppose we are the missing link between friends and strangers.

It is true that some animals feel empathy (elephants) but we aren't animals animals don't use their knowledge to overcome nature they have to go with nature's flow; oh and before you start screamin earthquakes and volcanoes at me I mean human's can live in inhospitable climates due to our ingenuity etc.

but animals use tools. crows put nuts on the street in order to crack them (they wait for cars to roll over them), chimpansees use sticks etc. now, this may not be actually overcoming nature, but i dont think this would be the line to decide what is an animal and what is not.
what i say is: most, if not all, behaviour patterns can be found in other animals, too, (when it comes to *human* behaviour patterns just look at the apes, they are all there). so i dont see no reason to distinguish. but you all can believe what you wanna, actually.

i know that question wasn't directed to me; but being such a perfect example - i'd certainly feel bad if tridenti, let's say, was incapacitated or something awful happened him or he died.
no matter how much you hate someone -- this goes ESPECIALLY over the internet, since people over the net can't really have done anything truly nasty to you apart from call you names -- they're still somebody's son, there's still going to be people affected by the death, and it'd be inhumane to feel apathy after hearing of their death.

It's the age old distinction of God vs Science. The examples you talk about are isolated; (that semi-colon was for you redrum) plus each crow has to learn the skill themselves ie. it isn't passed on through teaching.

Seems much more likely than it being "learned". There's plenty other animal behaviour that's passed on through teaching from parent to child, so I really don't see why you just said what you did..

yeah but that isn't an example of overcoming nature. I'm not talking about instances such as lions learning to hunt, i'm talking more about cases such as one heron (having been watching humans feed the ducks and fish) using bread to attract fish near to it; this isn't passed on to the offspring.

Penelope is the 18th and final chapter of James Joyce's Ulysses.
It is a very long chapter, but contains absolutely no punctuation - apart from 8 full stops. It's extreme stream-of-consciousness and one of the most incredible examples of the potential words have, and the beauty that can be instilled in literature by their careful arrangement.
"so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes"
LAZY_NOTES The chapter itself (just look at this and marvel at the vastness of it, devoid of punctuation. it looks a mess but it's actually quite readable.

Eh, yeah, it wasn't quite necessary, since there was a gap between it and the next sentence. Xeron's post contained multiple sentences in the one paragraph. One sentence even ended with the same word that the next one began with, as far as I can tell.
That's all I'll say on the matter. Bugger off.

It's almost like he's not wrighting but thinking the words onto the page, amazing.
It reminds me a little of the opening pages of Ian Banks' "The Bridge"; really great book for capturing the duration and vividness of thoughts going through one's mind which can't be translated into real time, the first few pages are about the thoughts and images racing through the character's mind after he's had a car crash. In real-time it's about 5mis but reading it takes at least 7mins.

About the dog thing. I suppose you`re all a pack of dog loving enthusiast, but what I had in mind was, that animals just follow their natural, programmed way (instincts) of being, they definetly lack consciousness.
Empathy implicates consciousness.

That's not what I meant but you have a point, no one should think themselves above anyone here, it all ties back to empathy between oneanother. Why do you think opto was banned? because he was a racist and though himself above others on the board.
In this case I don't think redrum was being arrogant, plus I take all constructive criticism onboard (it makes me a better person).

but I don't consider myself a guru, nor do i want to convey a holier-than-thou impression, which is what inevitably happens with this shit :/
i cut corners all the time (ie, not capitalizing "i" for 1st person, or the first letter of a sentence) but never do it when there's a chance of compromising the readability or comprehensiveness of what i'm writing.
on Ulysses and Penelope, yes you've touched on the case in point exactly there - it's Penelope's thoughts as she lies beside her sleeping husband that are on the page. it's amazing to try "speed reading" it. i don't know how but it still makes sense, even.. though it's such a mess.
as for Iain Banks.. the stream-of-consciousness technique has been copied a lot since Joyce invented it and I've never come across anyone who could do it quite as well as himself. That said, I've never read any of his stuff, so might just give it a go. Good idea for its use, I guess (car crash), although a bit morbid. How many pages does it last? It would be very very effective, i imagine, in that they're all rosy and mundane thoughts until a second or two before the crash comes and the thought pattern/type changes dramatically.
