elektron sps-1 vs....

ok... it is pretty obvious that i love my little drum
machine the elektron sps-1... so now that that is behind us
in the back of each of our little heads, with big ideas...

if i wanted to make autechre'ish beats with this machine...
should i buy a second one and just fucking "layer" it up"?

i've tried doing this sort of stuff before, recording some
crazy ass beats onto digital performer, and then sort of
mixing and beat matching to the best of my capabilities with
the drum machine... it doesn't have enough punch and lacks
the sonic capablities imho. i've tried running my roland
juno 60 through the inputs on the sps-1 and have come out
with some pretty little melodies locked into the elektron.
anyone else experiencing this same sort of feeling and
thought process in which i am telling you my likes, dislikes
of making "music"?

560 years down the road, i will probably think this whole
process in which one makes "music" is nonsense... and for
future reference try to create something original that makes
the ears tingle with delight and makes the spine shiver

I didn't read all of your extensive post. Whqat I know is
that autechre, to do the ultra fast drum beats have
customized and circuitbent their drum machines to accomodate
faster beat programming and higher BPM's... as well as using
more than one..

if only my brainwaves were into the extensive research it
must take to develop circuit bending and shit that makes
machines do more than the average consumers things... i am
just into that odd time beat making stuff which shouldn't be
a problem with most people here, because this is where i
have picked up loads of data that goes straight to my brain
about various artists trying to do whatever they want to do
with their machines and instruments

Aparently basic circuit bending isn't that hard. What you
do, is you have two metal pins, and connect them together
with a pair of aligator clips and wire. Make sure all the
metals involved are able to conduct smaller ammounts of
electricity and that they are conected together properly...

Then what you do, is you start at one connector in the
circuit board, and place the second pin from one connector
to the next, untill you find a pair that do something
interesting. Mark them off, and go about finding others
untill you have retired all the possibilities with that
first connector, and then start from the second, going
around the board once more. Continue this untill you have
tried all the connections, or found enough so that you are
happy. Saulder the various pairs to eachother with a wires
that have a switch in the middle, so you can turn the
curcuit bend on and off. Its that simple.

Haven't tried it yet, but circuit bending is an activity
that I plan to get into this summer.

I would be quite horrified, if for some reason, say for
instance I connect make a new circuit and overload my
machine... and then the reaction to my stupidity and
clumsiness (sp?) would cause my machine to break down and
fall apart.

The elektron machinedrum sps-1 is such a wonderful
instrument all by itself, I think that if 1) I had more
money to purchase more gear, I could dabble in doing what
you are talking about.

But then again, I would never know about destroying
instruments, because I still have so many things to learn
about them... it makes me insane. Just, if you could, think
of an automobile and when you add component parts to it, you
upgrade it's performance ie; intake/out-take, exhaust,
headers, spark plugs.... I'm pretty sure I understand where
you are coming from in saying that I need to get under the
hood of my drum machines and instruments and start tweeking
on them.

Love,
Mr. Quoth

Yeah... understandable. Thats why you should only circuit
bend things of small value, or no personal significance.

I need to get a drum machine. NExt thing on the list after
the sampler...
