Akai MFC42

Anyone heard this?, am thinking of buying one, mainly to
pep up the sounds of a few modules I've been given recently
that don't have great filters.

One guy has told me it sounds a lot like the Akai sampler
filters (ie very sharp and digital with crap glassy
resonance) but others describe it as a beautiful analog
squelchy beast.

I'm gonna hear it myself next week but it would be good to
know if any of you use it and what you think of it.

I've had a quick play with it and to me it does sound Like
the S series of samplers filter but I never liked them. I'd
suggest the sherman filterbank, it's probably a similar
price range but it can do the lot from boosting harmonics to
tearing you a new arse.

I considered the Sherman but I think it's about double what
the Akai would cost me (about £190), it's probably a better
filter though, but for that price I could get a Korg Legacy
which can do filtering, provide some choice sounds and I'd
have change to spare.
The only thing that's stopping me is I know the Legacy will
probably be redundant when I next upgrade my computer, being
a soft synth n all, whilst my hardware lives forever (well
at least while Synth Service Centre stay in business
anyway).
|'ll try and check the Sherman though, maybe I'll find a
cheap one somewhere.

A really good budget filter is the electrix filter factory.
Really musical and you trigger envelopes and lfo s live (no
midi) so it's fun, great if you're trying to add a bit off
life into things. Most of all it sounds really musical.

They've gone out of business now 'cos they misjudged the
market so you'll be able to pick it up for next to nothing.

a review

I could use a hardware filter.

I just need my sampler, and I am pretty much set for synths
and such, going to be looking into effects. Seeing those
electrix units kinda brings me hope, seeing as I don't want
to shell out many hundreds just for compressors and filters

Hardware generally isn't as user friendly as computer gear.
You have to make sure everything is connected properly, and
as far as I know, you can't really set your hardware to auto
open your patches, and it won't auto-save, so its more
difficult to just close and open songs. But it kind of makes
it worthwhile when you can touch your gear, and adjust
parameters with your hand instead of your mouse. Also, I
find unless you are looking for a thicker sound, software
generally sounds better. Its also harder to make sure
everything is sync'd.

Hardware is gay. It's funner to play with thats it. If I
have to fucking remap my fecking drum channels again I'm
gonna flip meng! And sysex?! Pain in the arse meng!
Bah I fucking take a tracker any day of the week meng!

Viva Fast Tracker 2 !

Hardware is funner by far though. So it's cool to have when
you want to feck around meng.

Skink you should pick up one of those all in one rigs. They
do a great job at helping you find out what kind of hardware
direction you want to go in. Because they basiclly have a
little bit of everything in them.

I'm not going to buy this now because Akai aren't prepared
to ship one out to the shop (P.M.T.) for me to hear before I
make the decision.
I've spent thousands of pounds on Akai gear in the past but
this suggests to me that Akai aren't really a company I
should be supporting, they obviously have little faith in
their products if they don't let people "try before they
buy" (as most other pro-audio companies do) so screw em,

You'd think that they would jump at the chance for more
sales in the current climate of soft synths but I'm not
gonna be buying any more of their gear that's for sure, I'll
try and pick up a cheap Sherman on E-bay.

good luck finding a cheap sherman (never gonna happen).
those things are fucking expensive. but a sherman is a great
filter. has lots of possibilties.

there's one for about 300 euros which isn't too far off the
price I'd pay for the Akai, I'm not gonna bid for it though
cos the seller is from Germany and the shipping costs would
be too much, but at least this gave me an indication of how
much I'd pay once a Uk one comes on the market.

saw that one too, again a good price (I think, need to
convert to pounds) but the shipping costs to the U.K. would
probably bump the price up a fair bit (if indeed they
actually ship to the U.K.)

b.t.w anyone use a Legacy? , I'm half tempted, need to know
how well it filters external audio though.
