Cosmic Baby was German or something I think, whereas I
vaguely remember that C J Bolland is from Yorkshire.
Possibly.

I'm confusing David Holmes' "Scubadevils" and CJ Bolland's
"Space Opera" and making a bigger tit of myself than
usual.

I must tidy up my old Trance Europe Express compilations.

okay... i'm gonna just do personal faves, but force it to be
fairly historically diverse:

Brian Eno
Eliane Radigue
Joe Colley
Robert Ashley
Aphex
King Tubby
Hafler Trio
Jan Jelinek
Rufige Kru
Oval

oh man... not a very good list... oh well

offline vacant from NYC (United States) on 2005-06-01 23:54 [#01619805]

list based on perceived importance, in no strict order, and
some various reasons:

kraftwerk
|-the original. laid the blueprint for electro, synth pop...
inspired the use of synths/drummachine in hip hop and disco.
they were the lead domino that felled the future forests of
electronic music

bambaataa/baker
|-inspired by kraftwerk, they brought synth instruments into
hip hop

the belleville trio (derrick may/juan atkins/kevin
saunderson)
|-same as bambaataa, only bringing synth and drum machine to
disco dance music, club music.. creating techno and the
endless subcategories that descended.

richard james
|-ultra talented. comfortable in a broad range of style, a
prodigy of sorts. can and does do everything well, and
brought his one of a kind personality to his music. put
cornwall on the map and ushered in many more people in one
way or another

autechre
|- they bend sound. a musically uneducated but disciplined
approach to electronic. able to create something like
movement and vision with rhythmic sound alone

king tubby
|-him and others ; basically a studio dj, responsible for
dub/edit/remix culture in music

stockhausen
|- made people think of sound and music in alternate ways,
foresaw modern machine music, proponent of concrete music

alec empire
|- assimilated techno, hardcore punk, metal, industrial,
breakbeats into one form- cyberpunk music for future
inclined teenagers-

tangerine dream
|- gave us electronic ambient soundtracks with
futuristic/mythic titles and themes that inspired future
producers

throbbing gristle(plus offspring)
|-peter christopherson would build his own kit before it had
been properly invented. they tore apart sound and destroyed
music, had to have inspired tons of noise/collage acts and
the following acts were important for electro(chris/cosey),
dark ambient/industrial (coil), and whatever the fuck
psychic tv was (maybe a little acid house? never really got
into them)

Autechre
Kraftwerk
Meat Beat Manifesto
The Orb
Boards of Canada
LFO
Brain Eno
Skinny Puppy
Afrika Bambaata

These aren't necessarily a favorite list or anything. Just
people who I have noticed has had a remarkable effect on
where music has come and is going. I wish I knew more about
the classic stuff though (pre-1988).

i forgot skinny puppy- electro meet horror movie industrial.
and SPK before them. also latin rascals mixing is probably
as important as the dub originators

offline Archrival on 2005-06-02 04:16 [#01619936]
Points: 4265 Status: Lurker

I mean this is not a list of the originators or something
like that...like the peoples who invented electronic music
styles like Stockhousen..just a essential list for people to
discover the best and most essential electronic music.

Brian Eno
Aphex Twin
FSOL
Autechre
Boards Of Canada
Kraftwerk
Squarepusher
Luke Vibert
Muziq
Vangelis

Glad to see another Vangelis in there.

Moby is the finest electronic musician in the world. Just
listen to his new masterpiece, "Hotel", if you're not
already converted. It makes me cry many tears of joy...
