Grado SR-80 headphones.

Yesterday I visited a local hifi shop called "Highend
Studio". I was looking for a preamp and found one, quite
expensive tho. But I've been checking the Grado headphones
for a while in the net and they've got amazing reviews. I
tested Grado SR-80's there, FUCK.. Amazing sounds... just
pure bliss.. I was listening to some jazz.. Does anyone here
have any experience on these headphones? I want ones!

i've always got the impression that Grados are pretty
open... so they're good for when you're listening at home...
but maybe not ideal if you want to take them out and
about...

i read on the headphones forum grado easily impresses
headphonenoobs, which means they're too unsubtle i guess
but it's a good step upto the better headphones
they dont ship outside the us

they are fucking cleeeear, i listened to some 125's. but if
you're bothered by missing out on bass, you would have to
look at the RS 1 or RS 2 which are unfortunately a lot more
expensive.

SR-80s are awesome for jazz, folk, classical, anything with
subtle delicate sounds. But I find them way too harsh and
grating for the likes of Autechre - it's like getting
icepicks stuck in your ears. Too much high end and they turn
shrill. Listen to black metal on them if you want to lose
your hearing.

Grado's are open-air so unless you are in a quiet room you
will hear ambient noise-

The salesman played jazz because that is where they excell.
If you like the sound I think you may be able to find better
value in the Sennheiser lineup.

i think a silent room even means you cant open your window
when you live near a road

i have a pair and i've had absolutely no trouble from
external ambient noise. The fact that they're open means
mainly that folk can hear you listening to them down the
hall: they don't keep the sound in ...... not really good
for taking out down the street, you're just going to get on
everyone's nerves.......they do sound great tho, i disagree
about ae sounding bad on them too....i went around loads of
shops listening to dozens of headphones before i got these,
listening to ae, lipswitch, miles davis and loads of stuff.
The grados sounded best to me, and they were the most
comfortable. They however when i mix down using them i
always find that when i play the music i mixed on a normal
hi-fi the upper frequency range always seems a bit muted. If
you want headphones for music making i think it'd be better
to go for a pair that have a flatter frequency response.

I just sold mine. I really liked them, aside from the shoddy
build quality and the comfort, or lack of. The ambient noise
is a problem if you live w/ loud mouths like I do. Sounds
definetly seep through. They are very nice, though. I
wrapped a winter hat around the head strap with rubberbands.
I'm getting these now;

Etymotic ER-4S

I always wondered what those headphones were that all the
stars wore, apparently the best you can get

Oh, I sold my sr-80s on ebay for more than I bought them
cause of the weak dollar. People in Europe are paying big
money for stuff from the US.

the grado sr-80's are fucking sick headphones, however, they
are not worth using if you do not have an amp to utilize
them with.

i usualy reccomend people the sr-60's who probably aint
going to buy an amp w/ their set

grado makes a sweet amp lodged in a block of solid
mahogany.

bogala let me know how the in-ears work out- eyeing a pair
myself.

so you guys are saying that I should get the Grado SR60's?
As I do not have a preamp and I will be listening and using
them with a computer or a cd player. are the SR60 as comfy
as the SR80's?

Yeah man get 60's, they are just more appreciated by the
majority of headfi guys. Not that the 80's are bad, no
fucking way, but most everybody would agree that the 60 are
1) the best entry into headfi and 2) the best bang for the
buck except perhaps the Koss PortaPro.

I started with 60's, they are amazing, I still have them and
they are my room headphones. A little too open for the
Montreal Subway. Then I got myself HD280 Pro. I absolutely
hear nothing at all in the subway, 25db isolation, but they
aren't as good as the SR-60.

Well, I got my etymotic headphones. I got the er-4s. At
first I thought they were shit cause they sounded like they
were coming through a tin can. I then realised the white
earplugs were too big for my ear canal. So I switched to the
black foam ones. Squeeze and insert. Kinda like sex. Anyway,
They expand in your ear and boom. Incredible bass.
Incredible sound. The detail is incredible. The isolation is
incredible. I can't hear a thing around me. These blow away
the sr-80's, but it is so important to get a good fit. I'm
thinking of getting custom ear molds done. Really amazing
how powerful these IN-EAR headphones sound.

dont those fuck up you hearing? Anyways, I ordered SR60's
and I should be receiving them in a few days.

no, the other way around. Since the isolation is so solid
you aren't gradually increasing the volume. They are over
your budget anyway., The retail for 330 usd. I got'em for
250. Worth everypenny.

I've got the SR-80s; fantastic headphones for bedroom
listening.

I received my Grado SR-60's today. Just amazing. I'm real
happy. It's great listening to Analord 10 with. Currently
listening to Gonzales - Solo Piano and sound great with
these. Thank you.

Let them break-in for about 50 hours man, you'll see they
are even GREATER after that. Put them. a little higher than
normal volume, with a CD on repeat. Wrap a towel on them,
put them in your drawer, and let them play for 2 days
straight.

You'll see the greatness of Grado Labs after that (well,
your first entry into headfi!)

I was going to make some noise cancelling headphones but
then I said fuck that and just bought some 20$ gunmufflers
and took the speakers out of some old headphones and put
them in. They get 29db reduction, which is rather nice,
especially for mowing.
