"Like fellow sample artist Beck, Autechre are masters of
sticking together random free-associations to make a moving,
living carnival of layered cacophony. "

Wow.

try any of the autechre reviews over at allmusic.com.

I can't quote from them, because I'm on 56k at the moment
and I just tried loading allmusic and it's not going to
happen.

Everyone's already seen this, but...

Autechre records are purchased solely by bald men in
expensive anoraks who would masturbate to a car alarm if it
was re-mixed by a German. This impenetrable curtain of
misanthropic noise - released with an accompanying
three-track DVD that features a squabble of hopelessly
pretentious video "interpretations" - is typical of the
menopausal electro-manglers' dogged refusal to bow to
convention and produce anything of interest to anyone not
either a) bald or b) German. It bleeps. It skronks. It
krrraaaanks. But mainly, it blows like a ruddy awful
hurricane. Remember, kids; if it sounds like a festering
hillock of tune-shy bum-wank, it's because it IS a festering
hillock of tune-shy bum-wank. Avoid as you would a bald
German.

I draw your attention to the review of "confield" on
allmusic:

"Despite the dozens of experimental electronics producers
constantly nipping at their heels, Autechre remained at the
forefront of academic sound processing with a highly awaited
sixth full album. Whether pushing the next new thing in 2001
is enough to keep listeners coming back to this LP years
later is a much different question, and the assault of
non-rhythmic beats sprayed all over Confield is enough to
keep most from even trying. Opener "VI Scose Poise" is a
bouncing-ball-in-a-ring-modulator production that reveals
only a few of Autechre's excellent minor-key melodies, while
the second off, "Cfern," keeps listeners guessing as well
with a parade of conflicting rhythms and head-spinning
beats. In fact, it's a palpable relief when "Cfern" leads
directly into more straightforward electro territory with
"Pen Expers." There are faint glimpses of the melancholy
beauty of Autechre's early work, but this experimental,
rigidly academic work is a record to respect, not
enjoy."

I'm surprised 3-1/2 stars were awarded considering the

With the lowest of warning rumbles "LCC" launches forward
like a rocket-propelled train on dangerously uneven track.
The track's structure, streamlined to facilitate maximum
forward momentum, communicates a sense of great urgency.
"LCC" might be a study in entropy: by its close the tempo
has slowed to a trudge, weighed down by drowsy, quavering
synthetic tones. The initial velocity of both this first
track and its successor, "Ipacial Section", recalls Jungle's
urgency circa 1992/93, except that the ruffneck attitude of
yore is here extruded into a parallel universe, viral
rhythms unfolding in a fractal rapidity that mutates
inexorably.

haha, that's REALLY deep.

for your reading pleasure

Untilted marks a new form of frenetic starkness that
might be compared to Alva Noto's output, except that
Autechre's sound is less clinical and more viscerally
muscular.

not too shabby
"Anytime people write about Autechre they always call
them complex, which is about as good a description as there
is. The Warp and Skam recordings duo, composed of Sean Booth
and Rob Brown, has a bastardized post-electro sound that can
sometimes make you feel like you're getting beat up by beats
or else doing difficult mathematic equations to the sound of
music, but they occasionally let some beauty and light
filter through. They are playing live—which means a lot of
indie-rock nerds who would otherwise never like techno,
standing perfectly still and looking dourly at the stage. "

Thing is, NME call Rephlex Records 'probably the coolest
record label on the planet' - or something similar.

If they had any knowledge of the relationship between these
artists (on Rephlex and Warp) they PROBABLY (emphasis)
wouldn't have published - as they always seem to do - such a
load of misinformed, unresearched, small-minded, gobshite,
trash.

Remember how they went on about The Strokes being this new
and innovative new sound. No mention of the (as it seems to
me at least) obvious influences from The Velvet Underground
and The Stooges.

I'm just ranting. But stuff like that FUCKS ME RIGHT OFF.
