Does anyone else here take SSRIs? I've been on Paxil for 4
days and I'm already starting to feel much better. My mind
is much more external rather than internal and I can handle
situations that would freeze me up cold in the past.
I'm not sure if they're actually working yet or if its just
my own excitement :)

Wiki Definition

Its for Social Anxiety Disorder. I cant handle large
gatherings of people too well.

I've done lots of public speaking, and substitute teaching
in the past which required me to get in front of people and
I've never had a problem with them because they were
controlled situations.

My problem is with unregulated social situations: parties,
the pub, downtown, etc.

Its probably too early at the moment its usually several
weeks. But at least you're optomistic about it which is
something I couldnt be!

Paxil seems to be popular although it seems to have a
nastier withdrawal than others, you may know already.

Only four days. My doctor said the time it takes to become
effective varies from person to person. Usually anywheres
from 2 days to 2 weeks. Regardless, it needs to be taken
over an extended period to permanently rebalance seratonin
levels.

paxil = seroxat = paroxetine. it's an anti-depressant (2nd
most common in the uk) which is usually prescribed if the
patient's depressive illness is linked to anxiety or
nervousness (which is very common). SSRIs are a designer
drug (i.e. not discovered accidently like most other older
anti depressants), and have less side-effects than
tricyclics or maois, and hence are much preferred over older
pills.

in 4 days it will be impossible for you to have had any
effect from the tablets. as you say, it will be more of a
placebo effect. youll have to wait 8-10 days or so before
they have a chance to build up in your bloodstream.

Yeah it must be my own excitement to get well.

Hah! Its working just fine so far. My doctor warned me of
the potential sexual side effects but I told him I would
rather be "socially celibate". He seemed to get a kick out
of that.

i`ve read in a biography of P.K.Dick (the sc-fi writer) that
he couldn`t handle eating in public places; this may be
somethin` similar.

Hehe :)

Well if it does happen then bear in mind that it can be
transient... when I first went on effexor a few years back I
could do everything but come for about 6 weeks, then it
seemed to come back.

in time, the drug will begin to cause carelessness and a
feeling of smugness with everything (including things you
SHOULD feel angry or sad about)

that will probably cause you to quit, and then you'll
experience the definition of withdrawal :D
