Before you enter, bring fire arms and friends with trench
coats.

Yes, human. Do it "matrix" style. I wouldn't have it any
other way. By the way... you have a booger on your
nose
.

I have failed my exams.

But, alas!

I will be a world-famous electronic musician. I will do
bigger shows then mr.Jean Michel Jarre, with bigger lazers
too. So fuck you, education system!

What did you get in your A levels? Hopefully music making,
drugs, and strange electronic music didn't distract you too
much from your work. ;-)

I can't be arsed to get into music making, but sometimes
wish I could.

I don't do drugs thankfully.

Strange electronic music came dangerously close to spoiling
it all for me.

I am on target for a B and two C's at A2 and already have a
C at AS.

Your grades are similar to mine, although at the start I was
on target for two As. Then it all went to shit.

Oh well, happy Autechre listening....

Don't got to a university based on the reputation of the
university as a whole, look at individual schools or courses
that excel. I went to an ex-polytechnic, which happens to be
one of the best universities for computing (as well as a
couple of other courses), despite the university overall not
being rated highly, and am very glad I did. Friends who went
to 'better' universities with worse computing schools are
doing a lot worse job-wise than me.

The only ones I'd really ignore this advice for are the
oxbridge colleges, even though they're only 'better than
average' in some fields, the name carries so much clout,
it's worth it alone (although none of my mates who went seem
to enjoy the social life/people, etc. aspect of it there)

Don't go to school for any reason other than landing a job
because it is pure life-wasting bullshit and certainly has
learning as the lowest priority. *goes back to wasting life

Ceri's point is more valid for graduate studies, I feel. If
you go to a place with only a pocket of good and lots of
suck, you'll feel like shit and not get as much out of the
general environment.

Being at a school with a pile of badasses rules because the
professors like their classes much more, are receptive
students, and the rapport with the students is much more
valuable in general.

Of course you should target a school based on your interests
(duh), but I'm saying, don't discount the general shit.

Unattractive females? Ignore the myths of all student birds
being sex-crazed ultravixens. For every one of them there
are a hundred munters who could easily be 'Millie Tant' from
Viz. This is true at most universities I've visited.

I agree with W M W, now that the days of student grants are
over, don't just go there for a 3 year holiday and piss up,
only to come out and get a job pumping gas or stacking
shelves. I've got mates who did that and it's a financial
mill-stone round their necks now. Don't go just to
get a job, enjoy it there, but make sure you will be able to
get a job at the end of it.

I don't want to take a gap year (I believe I will become

levels will be superior to the mocks that are used for entry
into university, I may have to.

Computing was my course, but a lot of the time was spent
doing kung fu, drinking, playing Tony Hawk and watching
films. I worked hard, but only near deadlines, but that was
more than enough. I was also student rep for my course, so
spent a fair bit of time attending staff meetings and
sorting out the problems of people who were (to be blunt),
too stupid to be at university.

CS2x. Yep, my mates (with one exception) who did that came
back less mature and full of wander-lust. They chopped and
changed courses and generally ballsed it all up. They also
got into the habit of spunking what little money they had as
students on 'travelling' (read, 1-2 month long holidays)
during the summer breaks, rather than working and saving the
money for term-time. Consequently they were always stoney
broke and are now 1-2 years behind compared to their peers.

On a more serious note, if you're going to do a longer
degree (eg architecture, medicine, or just a normal degree
with a placement and/or masters on the end), doing a gap
year is a very bad idea IMO. Two mates will now not be
graduating till they're 30, by which time, they will have
fairly short working lives to pay off the masses of debt
they've accrued.

I know, I think it's living in lots of different places and
staying in touch with them all.

sneakattack:

I think it's because, in a similar way to how W M W does,
whilst you make the odd insightful, meaningful post that
reveals you are actually quite intelligent, a lot of your
posts/threads are nonsense. Like WMW, I expect that, over
time, I will come to the opinion that the good outweighs the
bad and will interact with you on a more regular basis.

uhm, I'm currently on my first year in Finland, but I quite
nearly (that is, before failing miserably in the entrance
exams!) became an overseas Cambridge student. Now, whether I
would've enjoyed it there for an extended period of time, I
don't know. But I DO know I found the visit charming, and
many of the people there were lovely.

Now, on the other hand, I have a friend in Edinburgh, and
another one in Cambridge: the first one enjoyed the northern
breeze, while the one in Cambridge decided to drop off after
two months... So, I don't know. Probably the best
universities are the mid-sized ones, with something to show
off for course-wise.

Prestige certainly moists the mouths of CERTAIN people, but
do you really want to associate with these CERTAIN people?
:)

Ox & Cam are really nice places to go! I have met several
people who go there and are without exception
charismatic/fit. I am doing English, I think the stereotype
applies more to the sciences students as all the English
people I've met seem very socially adjusted. The most
important thing IMO is to look carefully at the different
sylabuses for each uni, I know the English ones were very
different from uni to uni when I was doing the prospectus
rounds.

I particularly liked the gating in places. The way it was
done made it sound like a DJ cutting bits out with a
sharpish crossfader. How did you do that, if you don't mind
me asking?

Whoops, wandeirng off topic...

Not at all. If its the effect I think you mean, it was
pretty simple, I just automated the master volume of the vst
instrument and made some sharpish spikes in the automation
track. I think I did the same with the mute track on some of
the audio tracks, but it clips a bit when you do that.

That's it; Ah so, it was rapid fades rather than on-off
muting. It's the way it cuts some instruments, but not
others, make it sound like 2 channels playing into a mixer
and one is alternately muted/allowed to play, whilst the
other plays on.
