 | hi
i am in desperate need of some help with designing a small
portion of my website. it shouldn't be too complicated, but
i'm afraid i just don't have the expertise.

are there any web design people on here who'd be willing to
help me out with this? you would of course be fully credited
 for it on the site.....

if so, please mail me: terry@mishkas.com

 | I don't really want to give the details on here, it's sort of top-secret at the moment. It's basically a database,
 though.

If you're interested in helping, then email me and I'll give
 you the full low-down.

Sorry to be so mysterious :)

 | That's OK - thanks for looking anyway :)
So, people, maybe I should have been more specific -
basically, I need someone who can make a fairly simple
 searchable database for the site.....

 | if your useing dreamweaver mx it should be relatively simple; a good book should be able to help you to setup a
simple searchable database. you need software for the
database (e.g. if its going to be basic MS Access) this is
where you will store the results if you like; that is name
 address username etc.

you then need to code a front-end form (can be done in mx)
and link it to this db so that your users can search for
terms and pull out specific info. thats a very basic
overview sorry... but a book may really help, i think it
seems harder than it is if you have the time.

 | Cheers.... the problem is that I'm abroad (Lithuania, originally from UK) and have no access to any such books.
Also, I'm really, really inexperienced with website
programming, so I've no idea how to do it at all.

I'm quite sure it is fairly simple, but I suspect it would
take me weeks to work it out, whereas I think it's the kind
of thing someone with the right expertise could bang out in
 15 minutes......

 | not necessarily; 1. get on amazon, you can have any book you want and they
 will deliver it to you.

 2. the relevant section will take no more than 3 hours to
 grasp.

 3. use the searches on the net for tutorials and support
 etc. (there will be loads)

 4. hopefully these points will suffice. good luck.

 | I know...... but I'm lazy and don't have much time...... I was hoping I'd find a database genius on here who could bang
it off for me in quarter of an hour.

 | if you want a database-genious, you shouldn't have asked for a webdesigner, then. you should also give a bit more info to
avoid having people who don't really know what they're doing
 mail you.

is it a mysql database, and will you be using php to access
 it?

 | ok. it will take more than 15 minutes, and it would require you to install certain things on the server if it's not
 already installed.

 1: php
 2: mysql

the thing that would take the most time would be creating
the database, 'cause one new entry in the database would
create two entries that cross-referenced each other (1 works
 with 2 | 2 works with 1).

I have no idea how to do a real search (I can do one that
would work well on a small database, and it's not very
effective), but considering how the xlt search is
progressing I'm guessing it's not easy. a new entry would
also require this search engine to check if it has already
been entered into the database, and prevent duplicate
 entries.

the login system would be the easiest part of it.

 | i'm sure that you can find web programmers in Lithuania who'll help you with the database for a very small fee.
