does your musical taste evolve?

i'm not even sure if evolve is the right word, if it
requires going forward. this might not be about going
forwards. maybe moving sideways. but i have noticed that my
musical preferences change quite alot. when i first started
posting on xlt i liked 90s techno and quite basic idm. then
it got weirder and weirder, and now i'm all for vocals and
sweetness.

why does this happen to me?

for me it's a lot about single sounds and samples, not the
general sound of the music. i have sound eras; i just got
out of a glitchy, noisy drone sound era, and now it's female
vocal era.

but i know people who go on years listening to the exactly
same stuff.

this evolution prevents me from obsessive fandom, since i
rarely like anything for a period long enough to get
obsessive (exept portishead but they are just too great)

of course it is normal. but i have thought about this alot
and i'm just curious why does happen to others if it
happens.

oh to others because others are growing up? your question
is vague i mean it's like "gee why do people listen to some
type of music for a while then listen to another type for a
while" gosh i don't know like

i'll just listen to anything that sounds good to me. my
musical taste evolves in the sense that i'm always learning
about and appreciating new/different music genres and time
periods. right now i'm into happier stuff, like recent belle
& sebastian and select works of beethoven.

i've been listening to belle&sebastian alot too.

mappatazee: i'm not sure how that is vague. 'why do people
listen to one type of music, then another?' i have seen
worse questions on this board. it's a thing i think about.
and as you can maybe read: i explained why it happens to me,
i was just curious to know why it happens to other people
(the reply from optimus prime was in the direction i wanted
to go)

let me reshape it to you in less words:

"my musical taste evolves because of certain sounds i need
to have in music for a specific time period.

why does your musical taste evolve, or does it, at all?"

there's developing/expanding your music tastes and then
there's "growing up". the former is the result of
open-mindedness, learning, personal enjoyment, and being
into music, etc and the latter is the result of becoming a
boring person.

I think the more important question would be do you evolve.
Generally, if you are evolving, the things you are
interested in will evolve with you.

But you seem to be merely changing your mind about what you
like. Thats not evolution, thats taste changing.

i'm sorry for my bad use of words. but i don't know what you
mean with "loading a question".

"i'm not even sure if evolve is the right word, if it
requires going forward. this might not be about going
forwards. maybe moving sideways." was written for a reason
:)

"I think the more important question would be do you evolve.
"
i didn't even think about that. of course i do. do you?

my taste changes are just so clearly linked to certain
sounds, and i was curious to know if people here experience
the same.

but for me it's clear, the sound thing, i tried to explain
it there. am i really that unclear about it? i'mnot asking
you why _my_ taste changes, i'm asking if yours does, and
why.

it seems like everyone here nowadays is just trying to find
mistakes from posts and people.

People always mistake changes for evolution. That is the
wrong conclusion. Change is an integral part of evolution,
but like evolution in the physical sense, its the changes
that work - or act in a beneficial manner - that really
determine whether or not its evolution.

you don't sound mean, and i'm not being at all serious.

seriously, i'm not a native english-speaker, so the meaning
of the word evolution might not be clear to me. and it is
not clear to me what i see myself either. you make great
points that make me think; thank you for that. i did post
this on a message board, so you are free to judge me, if you
see something to judge me about here ( i don't really )

but i do know people, whose musical taste just does not
change. so it can't be normal, if change is normal?

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-05-14 23:41 [#01599501]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker

It seems at a certain age, most people choose to settle.
There comes a point when most people just want the same
thing, and no suprises.

I mean, the music industry is ran off of finding "fresh" new
sounds to take advantage of.

So I think, that both change and staying the same are
normal. It kind of depends upon what state of normalicy you
are looking for. And how far along you are.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-05-14 23:44 [#01599502]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker

Furthermore, you seem to see not changing as the state of
things. Maybe you are just uncomfortable with the little
niche you have set up for yourself and are preparing
yourself for some non-change. Or maybe you are just looking
for excuses to feel better than those around you. People do
that all the time.

offline w M w from London (United Kingdom) on 2005-05-14 23:54 [#01599507]

Yeah, and not by choice. I have to listen to SHIT SHIT SHIT
music the entire duration I'm at work. In my mind, the only
thing I get paid for is enduring it. But I'm going to
chainsaw my head in half soon so this should solve that
problem.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-05-15 01:47 [#01599517]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker | Followup to neetta: #01599505

Superior mostly. I mean, everybody I can think of finds
different reasons to boost themselves above those around
them. Be it how they work, what kind of art they like, who
their friends are, what music they listen to, favorite
movies, food, clubs, taste in clothes, drugs... the list is
endless. its really about how they design their identity. I
mean, to you you see your taste in music being superior to
theirs, where they might feel that they have better mates,
or know the best place to get good cheap drinks with loose
women.

if i had to say a general thing, i'd say i'm evolving
towards more straightforward stuff, less experimental...

but since i like different kinds of music i'm also evolving
in different "layers" if you see what i mean ( ? )...

in metal i used to love Opeth, maybe i still love them now
but i'm more listening to grind and doom styles now... · in
electro i enjoy a lot more Underworld, Fluke, "Unreasonable
Behaviour" by Laurent Garnier, or in other genres Seefeel,
Air or Future Sound Of London, than Warp IDM stuff... · in
rock i recently got a lot into the Smashing Pumpkins and
Beck, love them; i discovered Alice In Chains also... i'm
only getting into 60's and 70's rock very slowly and i'm not
sure if i'll enjoy them as much as 90's... · in jazz, i'm
more into John Coltrane and Miles Davis now, which i listen
to more for the ambiance than anything else, and less into
John Zorn... · in experimental i've been listening to less
Coil for some time now, i don't know why, it's a shame
because they're great; still as much into Nurse With Wound
though... · still a lot into Mike Patton, got back into
Nine Inch Nails with the new album, got back into
Einstürzende Neubauten as well... more or less recently i
got into Morcheeba and Elysian Fields, just love them... etc
: )

I must say that i do similar things with music, always

What you mean is very clear to me.

When summer comes my taste in music always change , and of
course through the years aswell.

I think it's logic that it changes, I mean... who wants to
listen to the same style of music for a few decades?

And let's not forget that music is also envolving all the
time and therefor you are going along with it.

As long as you don't have the need to start a family nothing
really happens to you. ;)

It goes in circles for me.

I've been through 70s electronic music, classical music,
trancey shit, and all sorts of stuff. I'm back into the old
stuff at the moment, along with a nice dosage of IDM and
jazz.

I've learned I can't fight what I enjoy-sometimes I'll pick
up a CD I used to love and find it to be dull and shitty.
And vice versa.

I tend to back and forth between electronic stuff and hip
hop, this cycle has repeated itself for the last 10 years or
so, and with each iteration my musical scale widens further
while at the same time knocking out some of the IMO weaker
stuff like generic 'idm'. Growing up listening to mostly hip
hop I guess established a strong base for that kind of sound
for me, however sometimes the lack of interesting releases
in the genre pushes me towards something else. The same
happens both ways.

So in my case it's more about refreshing my ears with
something different so I could again enjoy a certain kind of
sound. Of course when widening your musical tastes you learn
to appreciate things for different reasons.

Not sure if that makes any sense, haven't had my coffee yet
;)

I was thinking about this a lot the last few days - about
how my taste has evolved last few years. I dont really
listen to electronic stuff much anymore - instrumental surf,
dub and french movie soundtracks are my main interests these
days.. it seems hard to imagine my favourite bands used to
be Metallica and Anthrax. Who knows, i might come back to
them someday.

Constantly, just a few months ago I became a fairly hardcore
fan of country music, which is something I never expected
would happen. And I'm doing well right now, have lots of
''listening projects'' on my plate and I've overcome my
downloading demons and not listening to new shit just for
the sake of hearing new shit. I'm really in the zone and
understanding lots of stuff I never understood before.

I don't work or go to school right now so the zone is easy
to stay in.
