Sandman, Hellblazer or The Preacher. Some very good storylines in those.

Um.
The Watchmen is great, yeah. "Maus" by art spiegelman is also ace. "Quimby the mouse" and "jimmy corrigan: the smartest kid on earth" by chris ware are awesome but very sad. Daniels clowes is excellent too, "ghost world" is a great starting point . You might know the film but the book is a lot more subtle.

Kochalka! I like his stuff, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and shit. I didn't know he'd done any novel-length stuff though.

Frank Miller I would recomend all his work specially Sin City and Batman: Year One. You might want to check some European GN as well, Enki Bilal and Moebius works like Airtight Garage, Nikopol Trilogy, Arzak and Blueberry are all well known in Europe.

i don't understand reading serious/depressing/realstic comics at all. i thought the whole fun is the fantasy or escape that stimulates the imagination and put you in this great world where you are empowered and feel good or have a purpose. but then i see stuff like watchmen or preacher or these indie books that are just verbatim from people's lives - it just seems so sad to me. doesn't satisfy any of the reasons i have for reading a little comic book. i guess it's just different tastes or something - i don't get them...

I can see what you mean. Kind of seems like a missed opportunity to take advantage of a very freeform medium with a low cost of entry for an artist.
