microphones?

i am looking for a microphone to record/sample acoustic
instruments with ... it should have a wide frequency range
(~0-20khz) and be rather portable + a 3.5 mm plug ... no
phantom feeding(?)

Sony ECM-MS907

For a decent frequency range, try this portable
electro-condenser microphone. Probly the best thing on the
market for both price and sound quality. Designed for
minidisc recording of accoustic instruments. I have tried
it, and it sounds nearly immaculate. The best thing you can
find for around $100-$150.

Apparently,
this one is very good too, but I have never tried it.

Furthermore with the sony, its phantom power source comes
from a battery that is held in its body, so you don't really
need anything other than the microphone and the recording
device. I am going to be buying one this week (although I
borrowed a friends for about 2 months a couple years back,
and I decided I couldn't live without one).

thanks Taxidermist for the tips! i might use my iRiver H120
to sample some guitar/instruments ... not sure if microphone
#2 will pic up noise form the harddrive if plugged in
directly into the iRiver.. but it looks really nice!

also... you could go to a recording studio. Rehearse untill
you are happy and record it the best way for a quarter of
the price with somone else picking the correct
microphones/positioning etc. Depends how confident and how
much practise you put in.

Well, that is the only problem I have heard about that unit,
that its so responsive that it will pick up sounds from your
recording machine. You want to get an eigth-inch sterio
extention cable. Those are pretty cheap tho.

With a minidisc recorder, you want to store your device in a
pocket, or a sound resistant bag, so that the mic doesn't
record it as well.

i have one of these, but i'm not really happy with
the frequency range (100-15,000Hz), i need more bass! might
get the Delta and use the extension cord from the sony
mic..
