i've heard it last night for the first time and my hair got
up after hearing first couple of seconds..this is a
brilliant album, the most exciting thing i've heard in a
long time! sort of jazzy, lounge, but real dark and quite
unusual..her vocals/interpretation remind me of jarboe a
lot..the music is well wicked too, plenty of diversity, lots
of excellent changes/upgrades..just an amazing album. they
said it was the best thing since her 'queen of siam' album,
but i love the music part on the last one quite a bit more.
on top of it all she's playing here next week i think! :)

also, im sure plenty of you know her because she worked with
many excellent people in the past; einsturzende neubauten,
swans, sonic youth..

oh my!!

and clint ruin/foetus...

i've heard very little of her music. apparently she likes
having it out of print and hard to find.

the first track is really something i've never heard before.
it's like she's performing a film in music only. i've
never heard it done quite like this. there's a lot of that
theatrical, film noir sort of stuff on this album, but set
in a very modern way. it's really interesting since it's
not a total throwback and it isn't totally new. it can be
jarring.

the music is my favorite part of this album. it has that
foetus quality to it where it's as much an homage to the old
noir soundtracks as it is a pseudo-jazz pastiche. maybe
it's because they have similar roots and it's the nyc sound.
there's also a strong hip hop undercurrent running
through this album. and on some tracks, especially on track
12, i'm really reminded of the famous "sopranos" opening
sequence music - but spliced with a really ballsy rap
element. the jarboe comparison is apt, but jarboe seems to
focus more on experimental vocalisations whereas lunch (at
least on this album) doesn't display much more than a couple
of raspy, smokey styles.

her voice doesn't always sit well with me, unfortunately.
it's a bit too atonal too often for my taste and it's mixed
too loudly for that. the mix takes away from the music
sometimes. the rapping isn't very good - it sounds sort of
lame the way she loops phrases - more like incantations
rather than verses.

my favorite tracks were smoke in the shadows, touch my evil,
blame, hot tip. it's a good concept album. i'd say this is
a fairly confrontational, in-your-face, love it or leave it
affair.

good review there! :)

i've been listening to it on repeat and it just keeps
growing on me..i love its diversity..and it's quite a unique
things she's got going there and im really into that sort of
sound atm..there are a couple of less good songs (that too
obvious hip hop influenced one you mention), but the
majority is just perfect for my taste!

only thing I know by Lydia Lunch is a short film she made in
which she gets fisted at some point.

this probably wasn't supposed to be the main focal point,
but to a 15-year-old boy this is arbitrary.

since then Lydia Lunch has been The Fisting Lady to me. is
there fisting on this record?

hmm... i don't remember that. she was in at least one or
two of kern's films... and she was in a music project
called stinkfist with jim thirlwell. i guess i haven't seen
that film you're talking about.
