Khanate

is amazing... i've always found doom-drone/doom-metal (à
la SunnO)))) interesting, but this one band really takes it
to another level. while Boris for example (which i love just
as much) takes doom-drone and combines it with other genres
to make one-track masterpieces evolving/travelling through
different sonic landscapes like -Feedbacker- or Flood,
Khanate amplifies the gloomy aspect of doom-metal to
impressive proportions... extremely slow, heavy, and dismal.
with one of the best "metal" voices to my knowledge as well
- not really "cavernous" but as "evil"-sounding as possible.
i find it impossible listen to it casually - breathtaking,
really powerful. someone described this music as "the end of
the world" - it summarizes pretty well.

they have two albums released so far, the first one
(self-titled) being more drone-y and the second (Things
Viral
) more "destructured"... listening to the second
one right now, both are astonishing.

you can download a track here, from the first album:

I've heard a couple of things so far. I'm not sure where I
stand on this whole genre really (sludgecore, doom,
whatever)

I remember hearing a track on Peel ages ago and thinking it
was awesome, but it was not really metal, it was more just
really dark ambient and it was fantastic. I think I remember
some people in the chatroom calling it 'the sound of the
world ending' and I agree with it. I wish I could find the
name of that one. It had no vocals btw.

no lyrics? might be "Touching Koroviev" ... it's the only
instrumental track off the two albums on CD. it's the
shortest also, only four minutes (all the others are at
least 9 minutes long.)

...but the Things Viral vinyl has different tracks than the
CD, so it might be one of them as well...

clint: you're welcome : )
but if you download Touching Koroviev, get the full album
while you're at it... it's worth it.

chambre noire: yes, i've heard of them - even that SunnO)))
was an Earth tribute band. haven't got an album yes, but
i'll get more interested in them for sure...

Earth - 2 is their darkest opus, 15 and 30 minute
long tracks with just down-tuned guitars and dark droney
riffs..

my avatar is from Disgaea, a ps2 game... my brother's
playing it, i'm not into tactical rpgs (or even normal rpgs)
- but i like the story and the characters of it.

DirtyPriest:
[#01588320] you're welcome! ^^
[#01588323] haven't heard of it, but i'll search...

Ondskapt was pretty good actually.. most recent black-metal
(post '95) i've heard lately has been really really shit!
this was a nice surprise.. old-school black-metal!

i'm almost positive that sleep and khanate could just be
called "doom". doom being this slow, dark, downer metal...
when i think of droney, experimental metal, i would then
think of earth and sunn o))).

anyway, this old track is really great. i should get their
new record...

4:38 in the AM - listening to "Things Viral" now for the
second time. Woke up drunk, so I thought it would be a good
idea to finish off the rest of my beers and listen to
Khanate. Listen, I'm a huge fan of early SWANS, but this
shit is pretty cool. Anyway, they are playing live in a few
weeks here; so I'll go see them. Max Stirner - "The Ego and
It's Own". Anyone interested in philosophical extremes may
dig that book. Fuck your God.
