What is your favorite plugin for music making, and why? It can be free or bought.
I find the Destroy FX vst effects very high quality considering they are free, and I am also loving the Hyperprism Direct x effects pack (although they really eat system resources.)

Do you use external effects?
I use those as well; a favorite is the Kaos Pad for it's ease of use.
But I like plug-ins simply because you can do detail audio-cutting and then apply different effects to each audio fragement.
I don't know how Squarepusher managed with external effects up until recently! (apparently he didn't use a PC)

There are software effects, plug-in effects....
Perhaps "hardware effects units" would be more apt then.
I think I'll avoid posting on xltronic at this time of night. It's nicer during the day.

"plugins are shit, use proper sounds"
Well, that may be your opinion, but plenty of highly respected electronic musicians use them.

Yes. Its the exact opposite of picking up an instrument and jamming out with it.

You don't think Aphex Twin, Plaid, Richard Devine, or Autechre make music? I hope you're taking the piss when you say that people who use plug-ins aren't making music.

Oh yeah, I can get some weird sounds out of that.
Turning feedback high and changing pitch on drum beats, with a bit of delay, and capturing the results...

Why should music be jammed out on instruments to be considered music anyway?
I love using analog synths and real instruments, but if I had the programming knowledge or an ability with Max/msp I'd gladly use that as a tool to create music too. It's still composition, but merely in a different way.
