I enjoy a thick slice of Prog Rock - not the Glam Prog Rock which is too theatrical and ghey for me, but long windy pieces by the Floyd, the Nice, R. Wyatt etc. Anyone else like it ?

I like some of the big-name classic prog like Yes and Floyd - especially Yes.
I'll have to look into some of these more obscure musics like Nice and Soft machine and Robert Wyatt. Recommendations?

I can nibble at the edges of the genre but I could never gorge myself on a Tarus or a Tales from Topographic Oceans.

I love that album.
The Nice feature Emerson (I think), from Emerson Lake And Palmer... the keyboardist anyway, I think it was Emerson.

Simon Reynolds did this list once of every band with a prog element and their respective Prog catagory, or something like that.

wyatt ain't prog. i don't know how you'd categorise him but he's not prog. have a look at old rottenhat or shleep, they're my favourites alongside rock bottom. and soft machine weren't prog - they were (eep) 'jazz-rock'. third is something of a masterpiece, 4 tracks, one for each side of vinyl. nice.
i'll scuttle back to my king crimson elpees now.

Get 'Yessongs' by yes, thats fantastic. For newbies get http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_... for a broad selection of tunes, of which most are actually fantastic.
Don't forget Jethro Tull, Deep purple and Frank Zappa! Prog rock is 10x better than most!!

Most of Yes's early stuff is fantastic. It's like one of those acid trips that feel like it's sunrise and the entire universe is hugging and kissing you and you do yoga on a grassy hilltop and then run down to the seaside to talk to a dolphin.

Ive got the LP for yessongs, and its a 3lp quadruple gatefold sleeve, which you can fold into a square and put round your head for 360 degree immersion into the fantastic landscapes and designs on the sleeves. :)
I've also got the CD, but the cover art is way too small and i think some bits are removed, but the LP cover art is fantastic.
....shame their later music is crap.

Some of the best new music is coming from the prog end of things. Specifically, all the great bands on Cuneiform Records & ReR.
