New to this artist i have just recieved Pulse demon from
the post. I was struck by the immense screeching nature of
the music. Is there melody behind the wall of noise? I'm
gonna listen to it later but can't be arsed at the moment
plus my mum will go crazy. I've heard pulse demon is thier
best followed by 1930 is this true?

theres allways melody, its just the people used to think
that melody must be hearable as a set of nice sounds in
specific order. which is weird.
what autechre did with halfer trio was also a melody, harsh
one, but still a melody.

i wouldn't say there's any melody in his music..well the big
majority of it. he's ace to see live though so go see him
when you get a chance :)

merzbows were.

i have 1930 and i listen to it when i wanna express protest
to something.

Merzbow has made so much of stuff that there is no sence to
listen to some particular album - take the first one you see
and listen.

I like his Game Boy produced track (on Nanoloop 1.0
compilation) a lot. I need more stuff like this to play it
LOUD.

you just need to reconsider theory of melody in overall
look. what makes harmony, whats a "noise" therm and stuff
like that.

yes, you're right, but it still doesn't sound melodic :)

yes, and it was fantastic..i've seen other noise artists
play live before, but masami was much better..he's actually
composing it live..great guy.

it's a bit more dynamic than merzbow...but still,to each its
own.

cool.
but a lot of noise artists improvise when playing live. If
not all of them.

yes, definitely, but they usually do it quite simple..laptop
and a good piece of software and they're ready to
go..merzbow was playing from two laptops and was sort of
composing it with the way he was moving his mouse..he has a
great sense for putting together layers so it turns out real
intense..

okay. i had a slight feeling of irony or sarcasm somewhere
between the lines. :)

anyway, if merzbow performs nearby i will go.

some noise musicians make their sounds not from laptops -
they use simple things like hi-hats which they knock with
thair fingers, while another hand controls effects so that
hihat sounds like something extratterrestrial.. some pour
sand, little stones near the mic, rub bells, kid toys like
small xylophone, use their own breath.

i only have satanstornade (merzbow+russ haswell), its great
but do not have any melodies.

i have also 2 cds by powerbooks for peace (feat one guy from
team doyobi) its pretty hardcore & not as "quiet" as
merzbow, not very good also

in nanoloop program.

yes, i've seen those kinds of shows before and loved them,
but for white noise they usually use laptops only. there was
a funny guy opening for merzbow when i saw him few months
ago and he was using rhythm machine and keyboard programmed
with dirty heavy guitar sounds..it was fun but not really
impressive music wise.
i'd love to see matmos live one day..they're surely one of
the best live improvisation artists..they tend to use weird
stuff and apperantly it always turns out great..

there is smth strange about matmos. i have 4 albums and
don't like them more than "6/10". but they are said to be
very cool live.

hehehe :)
Gantz Graf is rather abstract, too. Less, of course, but...

offline penexpers from Toronto (Canada) on 2005-04-18 08:13 [#01569030]

really difficult to listen to, makes gantz graf, pen expers
and cap iv sound like Pop music.

However the more abstract the music is does not always make
it better for me although i like it to be damn abstract.

Merzbow seems good from what i've listened but not in the
same league as ae's abstract shit.

scope and ingenuity of MERZBOW's musical manifesto

I could never really manage too enjoy noise music. But I can
see the appeal.

I said the same about Autechre, so it could grow on me. I
can't understand what actual skill goes behind it, but I
supposed that's not really relevant anyway.
