as i learned the hard way, don't post any new music on xlt within a 3 day radius of any autechre event.

oh the trebly sound hurts my ears and i'm not into the atonal 80's breakdown. it's not a bad start for a song. better production would really help this track. could use a lead melody.

Hey, that is quite nice. I think the glitches become a little annoying though.

radar indicates we are now beyond the 3-day radius. thanks for the comments so far. :)
r40f: which trebly sound? my hearing is exceptionally bad, and i have really shit speakers, so i hadn't noticed. yeah, i'm not too sure whether i like the breakdown or not either. what else about the production could be improved? (this is one area i am not very good at, but i'd like to work on improving my production skills.)
skink: maybe i did go a bit overboard with them. also, they're on the whole mix; perhaps only gitching the melody or the drums would work better.
if anyone else would care to have a listen that would mean a lot to me. thanks :)

the "tink" sound that's part of the "drumkit". i guess the closest thing it sounds like is a hi-hat, but with the treble turned up all the way so that it hits my ears at the same frequency as when a huge, huge blast of feedback has just made my ears completely raw and tinny. maybe others won't be bothered as much by it, but my from personal experience it reminds me of pain. ;)
the atonal breakdown at 1:35-2:00 kind of ruins the vibe. i think the glitchy drums could be a bit more subtle, but i like them all right.
the problem is there's a chord progression, yes, but no real interesting melodic lead. listen to HAB-era aphex, for example. there are many synths and some of them sort of play chord progressions and some harmonize and give it an actual distinctive melody. you need an interesting melody so that it doesn't get boring. yes, there is some riffing around towards the end, but nothing sticks out and carries the piece.
the drums and the overall mix need fixing. maybe that one synth is too loud. there's not enough bass and the tink sound drives me nuts.
i hope i don't sound too harsh - i'm just trying to help.

The first 1/3 of the track was really nice, and I sat hoping for a really big lush development (strings and perhaps some beefy drumsounds/patters), but the break where you introduce the atonal hi-pitched c64-esque sound breaks off the mood imo.
The cutups got a bit excessive as skink stated, but applied to the drums I would think you'd get an effective/cool result. I would do some lazy slide/portamento-ish pad sound after you (hopefully) clean up the break part, and do some nice harmonisation with that. The track got potential, and as I said the beginning is very good.
Good luck with your work on it.

While it wasn't bad it was a bit standard-IDM, I can't hear, to be honest, a single original element, nor an attempt to produce anything other than an inoffensive bit of IDM-lite. I think r40f above makes some valid points.

maybe i'm just perverse, but i'm enjoying having my track torn apart quite a bit. lots of valid criticism and suggestions. thanks for taking the time to listen and reply.

i think it'd be awesome if the beat was more in the track or mix and the melody more floating in space above it
that should be accomplished with reverb, delay, panning and volume :)
