Why are reviews so crap?

I really enjoy reading people's opinions on music on
messageboards like this, as a lot of time they seem to have
logic and seem to be informed.

But why are most official reviews (those on music websites
and especially music magazines) always so devoid of logic
and understanding? Every review I've read in magazines for
electronic albums either lavish praise without any thought
or evidence that the music has actually been listened to
(while using ridiculous metaphors and "poetic" similies to
describe the music) or diss the album in the most annoying,
cynicle, popularist manner while making no logical
references to the music once again.

Arrg.

Because it's their job. Probably.

a lot of that comes from them thinking they are Writers and
should act accordingly.

You misunderstood my point.

I love literature and writing, and if the descriptions fit,
then wonderful.

But some descriptions in the music-reviewing world defy
belief.

i really enjoy reading reviews myself... short ones tend to
be worthless because they can't say much... but long ones
are nice... i hear people complain about reviews a lot, but
i have a hard time understanding precisely what it is that
people want from these reviewers... when they get creative,
people cut them up for being indulgent... when they make it
sound like a math equation, people talk about how elitist
they are...

you misunderstand my point.

I love literature and writing, but not in a review.

a review is journalism, not creative writing.

I do not want endless similes vomited over me, I want it
simple and straightforward.

i see what you're saying but i disagree... i'd rather
reviewers take the opportunity to respond creatively to what
they hear... certainly, i would say that most are pretty
terrible at this though, and so i can understand the 1000
similes comment... alls i know is reading reviews about
something like IDM gets very old when all they talk about is
how "the beats skitter"...

I read a review to get a quick impression of what the music
could be like, not for the review itself.

a lot of review-writers seem to think I read their crap for
the latter reason.. the wretched fools!!

and certainly - reviewing music is one of the hardest things
to do, which is why it's even more sad to see so many people
who think they can do it. :(

I agree with qrter. I want to be informed about the music,
and perhaps entertained at the same time. I do not want to
be assaulted by the reveiwer's ego problems or dire creative
skills.

And I am really not exaggerating; read reviews of Confield
or Druqks in particular for some stunningly stupid ideas. I
laughed out loud when I read that the drill tracks on Druqks
sounded "repetitve" and "dated" in some magazine.

still loving that "dach" release, btw.

I should send you a kiss in a box, but it would go off and
smell kind of funny.

i think Qrter is saying he doesn't need the review to be
entertaining... and as for the Drukqs thing (and it always
comes back to this on this forum...): not everyone is as
devoted to IDM as the people of this forum... when people
say that drukqs is repetitive, it's not that it's a 4/4
beat, it's that they think it sounds formulaic... which i
personally didn't feel about drukqs... but i definitely can
understand the sentiment given that i definitely feel that
way about all of RDJ's post-drukqs drill output...

i agree with mappatazee, i think the main reason is because
it's their job. if it was my job i would just make some
shit up..

then again i have a nearly unattainably high work ethic
