I like arial. Its simple, doesn't have any serifs (I hate serifs), is easy to read and looks good.

For web, Arial/Helvetica or Georgia if you insist on serifs. For print, Times.

Impact is too intense for everyday use I reckon. Yeah Ariel is good for web etc. I like Verdana too although its a bit girly. Suprised it hasn't been mentioned yet..

yeah, impact and motor are not for big text passages...
Taxidermist> I like impact, can't help it. I know it's not very good. And there are more fonts i like, you know. But I agree with you on the fact that i have bad taste in fonts.
For text documents, i'd use Times.. but not usual Times New Roman. Old soviet books were all printed with the font I mean, saying this is Times family, but it looks like Bookman Old Style.

Comic sans is horrific. Apparantly Times New Roman is the easiest to read, hence it being a standard for the press.

that's a rough one...
Serif: Adobe Garramond (with oldstyle numbers) and Perpetua
San Serif: Interstate, Frutiger, Helvetica Neue, and Meta
Slab: Clarendon and Rockwell
would have to be my tops.
