Audio equipment for recording live shows

I'm really looking forward to AE coming to my home town in
May. I want to know what type of equipment is best for
recording. I want the quality level to be on par with the
Portland live show of 2001.

Hey thats awesome of you! I have heard many poor quality
rips of live shows! Good of you to investigate this matter
for the good of the group!

:)

Yeah, its about time I pull my weight around here :) I want
to upload the show to phobia or soulseek or something so I'm
conerned about quality. I was thinking about burrowing a
friends mini disc player with a small mike but it doesn't
seem good enough. I need help guys!

the best bootlegs are always from soundboards. does anyone
know if ae's sound tech (assuming they have one) lets people
tape from the soundboard?

even if they don't let you plug into the board, i've heard
instances where bootleggers would sneak around and plug into
it discreetly. if you know your way around a mixing board,
this is possible.

I'm sure I could look for the output port somewhere but they
might think i'm up to something funny and kick me out. I
think I'll just try to get some decent recording gear. I'll
look into it. Just remember to post your suggestions.

Oh man, how do you people even get recording equipment in?
Every time I go to a concert I get felt up!

since it's not a detroit-underground party, i doubt we're
gonna get access direct to the boards ... and who knows how
tight they run things ... i would just go with a mini-disc
and binuaral mic (from waht i hear) works pretty well,

glad yer handling it so i dont have to worry about it ;) :p

it depends on the venue... i've been to concerts where they
have metal detectors and search pockets and they people in
with their minidiscs and microphones... so you just have to
find out what the deal is for that particular venue and the
artist.

A word of advice Mertens, is don’t stand too close to the
speakers. When I recorded the Aphex/Vibert 2004 Perth show I
was literately 3 meters away from the huge left speaker.
That’s why the recording turned out soo shit with
rumblings.

get it off the soundboard. i've done this loads of times at
gigs, especially easy if you're involved with the gig in the
first place. most performers don't like you doing it but
what they don't know doesn't hurt them eh? i've got a load
of sets by people i know, clean as album releases, this way.
fucking tasty.
why anyone would want an autechre set though, i don't know,
as they suck an old cunt.

I'm about to order a minidisc player with line and mic
inputs but haven't decided which mike to buy yet. I don't
know if recording equipment is allowed so I gonna be covert.
Still any suggestions for the type of mic I should get?
Anyone know what was used to record the New York 35min show?
The sound quality on that is what I'm aiming for.

I'm about to order a half grand worth of equipment and just
found out that the venue I'm going to is NOT cool about it.
:-(
I'm pretty sure they'll do a full search with the wand and
everything. Hmmm... How am I gonna pull this off...

I found out from a friend who is involved in the venue that
it shouldn't be a big deal. I will proceed as planned.

BTW bump.
