Lately I've really been getting into country, which is a
genre I haven't paid much attention to other than really
vaguely country-ish stuff like Wilco and whoever. But then I
heard Gram Parsons and the International Submarine
Band/Fallen Angels/Flying Burrito Brothers/Sweetheart of the
Rodeo-era Byrds and I just got hooked on the early country
rock sound of Buffalo Springfield and the like. Parsons was
supahgroovy, it took a couple years for his influence to get
me to dig deeper but I'm putting some effort into it now.

Dug through my grandfather's old records/8-tracks/casettes
and have been burning him a LOT of music that I downloaded
illegally. He likes mostly the stuff from the 40s/50s/early
60s... Marty Robbins, Chet Atkins, Hank Snow, Hank Williams
(what a badass), Jim Reeves, etc, so I've listened to tons
of these guys in the last couple weeks. Out of all of them,
Hank the First is the best, something about his voice just
cuts your soul down to the bone (?!?!)... I guess I kind of
grew up listening to him, in a way, since he was often
playing in the background, warbling pussy whipped tortured
soul. But probably my favorite artist I've gotten into since
my country phase began is Kris Kristofferson, though. A real
man's man, a real gruff, yet sensitive (and sensible) male,
nothing like us sheltered fairies here at Xltronic.

Anyway, who else here is into country? Kind of a weird
revelation for me, I guess I was always a country fan at
heart. Any ''Johnny Cash or bust'' dorks here?

what's the connexion between "hank williams" and "badass"?

i have all songs hank williams released on three cd-rs. i
listened to them a few times and i liked some songs. "i met
my future wife today" i found pretty cool. but i didnt get
THAT MUCH into it. in a way i can relate to the music in
another way there's something in this music that makes not
want go on listening to it.

I'm no connoseur in country but I have been listening alot
to Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood over the years, and some
Johnny Cash here & there. I haven't broadened those tastes,
but some of the more modern type of stuff is interesting,
like Woven Hand for example. That's it I guess.

The bastid killed himself with boozes and drugs when he was
29 and he lived a rock and roll lifestyle before rock
existed. He was badass, yo. His music sounds pretty modest,
he ain't no Merzbow, but he was keeping it real.

Woven Hand is awesome.

Kris Kristofferson is the best though, his music is what
compelled me to start this topic, you might want to check
him out. Kris 4 ever.

most of this new pop country today is pure shit. and by
'most' i mean 'all'.

The older stuff is tolerable, but I just dont relate to any
of it. I'm a city boy.

Agreed. I asked my grandfather what he thought of channel 19
(AKA Country Music Television) and he just started swearing
under his breath.

hank williams is one of the most underrated guys ever. his
voice is exactly like you describe, ophecks. his lyrics are
so fantastic. i guess you either dig this stuff or you
don't. it's so powerful and simplistic... his music is
just outstanding.

on the other hand, i think cash is a bit overrated. i
prefer willie nelson to him... and hazlewood, i'm more
familiar with him as more of a pop songwriter... i like
that stuff a lot.

I grew up listening to country music courtesy of my father
(REAL country, not that shit that passes for it today). Like
any genuine avenue of human expression, it definitely has
its worth. Songs about boozing and heartbreak? Sign me up.
