i have come to the conclusion again (after forgetting the
first time i discovered this) that there is absolutely
nothing wrong with 48k or less, mono mp3s.

i ripped a bunch of mp3s at this quality and moved them to
my pocket pc (dell axim pda) since it only has 1 speaker and
i hardly use headphones with it and treat it like a mp3
player.

so i hooked it up to my buddy's stereo the other day

played some richard d james tracks and boc,

and i was hearing little parts (specifically in the boc
tracks) that i haven't really heard before or didn't "catch
my ear"

really weird, really really weird.

i went back to the regulars and it was hard to find those
parts again (taht caught my ear)

really weird, but pretty fun in the same way.

i dunno how else to explain, but it was pretty damnfresh

sounds like those parts you didn't hear before are just
artefacts created during conversion and not really part of
the original track anyway.

no, to my understanding the shit quality simply toned down
the parts im used to hearing and have programmed myself to
automatically hear after extreme numerous listenings ... and
brought out some of the other parts i never really had the
chance to hear like that before.

note: i am currently not actively converting my mp3s to
48k/mono

you hired someone to do it for you?

someone hijacked your computer and is converting them
against your will?

i was able to hear a lot more in BoC's whitewater (the
talking or conversation, whatever behind the track music).

you should pitch up a 32kbps boc mp3 8 octaves then
timestrech it to 90 bpm. you'll hear stuff you've never
heard before.

yeah, and also use noise-reduction, capture a noiseprint of
a part of the song, apply the noise filter, pitch up seven
halftones, mixpaste the regularly timed version of the song,
timestretch it to 200% and then invert the left channel.

or just convert them to 48kbit mono and it'll fuck the sound
up just as much

Yeah, I know what you mean - sometimes a lower bitrate
emphasizes different parts of the music. You could probably
get a similar effect with a lowpass or bandpass filter.

sure thing

it puts a nice warm feel too it as well, almost like from
vinyl but slightly (yet moderately) different
