"Tabla Beat Science began as a collaborative studio project between Indian-born tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell, and has since grown to embrace a loose configuration of artists and a sub-culture of its own. The Tala Matrix CD, released on Axiom/Palm in September 2000, features "tablatronics" pioneer Talvin Singh (whose solo debut OK had won the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize the previous year), as well as impeccably recorded performances from vocalist and sarangi master Sultan Khan, Bombay percussionist and jazz veteran Trilok Gurtu, and Brooklyn-based drummer and producer Karsh Kale."
Yes.
i love tabla beat science, and you should too!

i just started playing tabla a few days ago, got my first set on friday, i love them!
tabla are two Indian hand drums, one is played by the left hand and has a very bassy sound (this is called the bayan) and the other is played by the right hand and has a high pitched tone (which is usually tuned to the tonic of the song) and is called the dayan.
traditional tabla playing is one of the most advanced rhythmic instruments, with highly complicated rhythm cycles (called talas), which range from 3-beat cycles to 108-beat cycles. odd-numbered cycles are common, such as 5, 7, and 15.

are you prepared to study as the traditional students do? are you going to seek the tutelage of a master and study for the rest of your life?

Saw Ustad Rashid Khan perform recently (Indian Master vocalist)............ there was an opportunity for the audience to ask questions and it was interesting to hear the artists descibe their relationships with their Masters as being akin to a relationship with God...... total devotion (or Bhakti). Different approach entirely to Western music, even Western Classical music. And the energy these guys had when playing live was incredible.
Corticalistim: Good luck with the tabla............. d/l "Tala Matrix" on your recommendation

I don't like tabla. Tacky!
Tabla beat science is ok. I just don't like the way Bill lasswell embraces standard eastern sound and philosophy to make a brand of easily spreadable paste that everybody can live with. People seem to think it broadens things, but it doesn't. It just leaves them thinking things have been broadened, kind of in the same way macdonalds makes you think you had just eaten a meal. Kinda like michael moore.
True enlightenment doesn't come from listening to music inspired by eastern philosophy. It comes from suffering.

i have a drum which i suppose is a part of the two called Tabla together. It doesn't sound the way it does on tabla beat science and all records which claim they use tablas. What's the reason? mastering, EQ, FFT and effects? Or I don't have the tabla drum?

oh, that's cool. the students are like willing slaves, i've heard - they have to do anything the master wants in the hopes that this week he'll teach them a technique, for example... interesting way of life.

They're willing to act like slaves to play the drums? Oh they must be enlightened.
Anything with such ball-achinly po-faced, wankier than even James Lavelle could concoct type name such as "Beat Science" is begging for a fucking slap.

it's a different culture with different traditions. i wouldn't be so quick to judge, although it isn't something i would ever want to do.
