that's a tricky question because one would think it depends
on the person writing a review to have their own personal
style.

Write as you listen for the first time, describe what you
are feeling, then when you have finished listening listen to
it a few more times. Then repeat the exercise of listening
right the way through and writing just what you feel as you
listen.

Then take both drafts you have written and use them to write
a definitive version.

I'd say rather go with the first impression. It isn't
tainted by "getting used to the sounds."

extra step if you write for something like pitchfork:

do all that, then think you are a Writer and start adding
elements like personal anecdotes, try to make vague
connections to other albums - in short, make it unreadable.

you forgot calling it things like "the album Vince Vaughn
never released."

maybe you should practise on it for an while and write it
down and then after an while you should listen to the album
and se if what you wrote matched i think it will take some
time but it probebly be worth it

for music journalism you also have to point out that because
the new album by this artist isn't like the last, it has
fallen way short of your high expectations. if it is like
the last one, criticize their inability to come up with
something new. and if it's pitchfork specifically, be sure
to include your resume and mention that you loooove rolling
stone, nme and spin.

Write a review NOW and post it here for.. reviews.

good idea, we will review tolstoyed's review and rate it on
a scale comparing it to reviews by other reviewers and claim
that his review is an homage to theirs but it's also ironic
so you don't understand it.

are you serious? i can't write in english, i can post a
slovenian version if you like though :)

im not sure if i should write anything after the first
listen..it happened before that i was amazed after the first
listen but got bored on the second..maybe that ecnadniarb's
idea isn't all that bad..hmm
but yes, i imagine it takes a lot of practise..

well, i'm no expert by any means... but i would listen to
it, write first impressions and a draft review, then listen
to it several more times to let it sink in and get used to
it. and then i would rewrite the draft. similar to what
ecnadniarb said.

yeah, that is a good idea i think..i'll try it out i
think..

there's an audition, and they want a sample review of a
recent album or gig, and 3 playlists containing 50 songs
each and an artist can only be used once. they want people
who like punk rock, electronica, jazz, etno..but also with a
bit more knowledge about one of the genres..i might try it
out, it's what i do when i don't do anything anyway :)

I recon you'd have a pretty good chance at it.. with the
possible exception of the guy in the record store who knows
everything (I think he's just grown up behind that
counter and listened to EVERYTYHING they've ever taken in
and that he could get his hands on through friends and
internets (I bet he's even heard all the artists on here
even though he's not on here)), you know of and have
listened to more music than anyone, I think...

haha, yeah, those guys working in music stores are
awesome..well, most of them..they know everything..i know
this one guy who checks out (almost) every album they get
it, and he even remembers what sort of music is it + he
loves to give recommendations :)

you'd be surprised how much music people who work on that
radio know..i usually only know the most popular artists but
there are thousands of various alternative bands i've never
heard of, but a friend who already works there said i'd have
a pretty good chance so if it won't take too much of my time
i might try to apply for audition..oh, and there are people
on this mb who know way more music than i do, it's just that
they never post about it because they're too busy finding
out new stuff every minute :)

i know more music than most of the guys at my local record
store... they didn't even know vsnares. anyway, tolstoyed,
you'd be really good as an album reviewer, i think. you
have good taste and that's most important. you don't need
to know everything if you specialize in a genre or style.
and feel free to practice with reviews of planetarium
records stuff - i'll post them if they're positive. :) i'd
prefer them in slovenian, though.

haha, thanks, how will you know if they're positive if i
write them in slovenian though? :)

i would only do this if it wouldn't take too much of my
time, since im very busy as it is, there are only two
reasons why i'd even consider doing this - to get to know
more music (since they have a huge record collection) and to
meet more people who have same taste in music as i do, which
are really hard to find here otherwise :)

knowing more about language and linguistic skills is far
more important than knowing about the topic; that is only a
bonus. just knowing your subject is really not the issue.

i disagree. i think most of these music journalists do know
a lot about music, just not necessarily what they're
reviewing.

just knowing your subject isn't enough

yeah, ok. as long as you can compose sentences properly
(which tolstoyed often does much better than me), you're
fine. i suggest just emulating what you like about reviews
you've read, honestly. i like reading reviewers'
harebrained ideas about what songs mean to them unless
they're pricks about it and i also like it when they DON'T
tell me the same bullshit about the band over and over that
i already know. a lot of them just paraphrase from the band
bios (which are often bullshit to begin with) and don't even
need to know the band to churn out the same template review
they wrote last time. annoying.

yeah, i guess teaching is a lot like journalism. cast back
to your school days.... you must have had teachers who knew
their subject very well but, fuck, weren't their lessons
boring as?

innit. typical drukqs review:

"this is the acclaimed album from aphex twins who lived in a
tank (relevant?) and drives his own bank (whats that got to
do with drukqs?) his mum and his dad are called lorna and
derek (so?) and he is a genus. his music is mozart of
techno.

haha - yes. thus starts the review.

just like reading any melvins review, i skip the first
paragraph automatically: "the melvins knew kurt cobain and
that's why you and i know the melvins kurt cobain. they
were part of the seattle thing (not true) and were friends
with kurt cobain for a long time. kurt cobain loved the
melvins and so did the other members of nirvana. kurt
cobain helped produce one of their albums and that brings us
to this 2004 release that has nothing to do with their
friend kurt cobain. the melvins are so weird and
unpredictable and they have said many things in interviews.
kurt cobain."

yes, that is very true..i hate those reviews that talk about
everything else but the actual music..but it must be put in
a witty form and that can only be done with language skill i
think..i have lots of respect for people who can do that,
and the thing is there are people like that working here
already so i know in advance i'd suck compared to them :)

ixten, yeah, they had to know it well and be passionate
about it or else it was boring..

haha, i read a fantastic review about drukqs in some cool
magazine, it was in slovenian though, and it wouldn't sound
half that good in english as it sounds in slovenian :)

hmm, those things are real stupid..i would never send
something like that for an audition..it would be too
embarrassing as they really put out quality stuff..it's the
only/biggest alternative radio station in the country and a
respected institution overhere (and a wider area)..it's that
radio station where some of those punk bands you checked out
recorded their songs 25 years ago :)

passionate about music, so experience isn't required as long

btw, this wasn't my idea..a friend who works there already
(the same thing) told me i should apply for it because i
listen to the music that fits their program. i just need to
find out exactly how much of my time this would take because
i've been real busy lately and it doesn't look like i'll be
any less busy some time soon..but since i practically only
do stuff related to music in my free time that shouldn't be
too much of a problem :)
