you can be banned if the site has a policy on banning people
with a low ratio (amount downloaded vs amount uploaded).
you can find out in the site's faq. in theory, everyone
should be giving back as much as they take (1:1 ratio), but
of course they do not if they don't have to.

are you using the basic bittorrent that looks like just a
download box or are you using something more elaborate like
azureus? if it's the first one, i don't think there's a way
to "pause" it. you can press stop and resume it later, but
it will have to recheck the files, which could take a while.

You can right click the torrent in your list and select
"stop" to pause

& i used uknova to get the torrent file

offline xceque on 2005-04-02 14:43 [#01551061]

And I assume it resumes after you close it down and start it
up again. I've not actually rebooted or even closed Azureus
down since I installed it :)

ok, you just have to use the play and stop buttons. stop
should act as pause in that program. az only re-checks
automatically if it has been closed down while torrents are
in the middle of downloading.

yeah azuerus is the best i heard and you can decide how much
you will share.you most share some but not much

offline earthleakage from tell the world you're winning on 2005-04-02 16:20 [#01551237]

how do i share?
can i only share what i've already downloaded?
does it automatically share parts of the file you are
currrently downloading?

just keep the torrents loaded and azureus running --> you're
sharing.

you can also make your own torrents by using, for example,
azureus itself to create a torrent from a movie you have and
then uploading that torrent to one of the torrent sites you
visit.

but the simplest thing is to keep up and running the stuff
you have downloaded.

aha, you're missing the basic idea that makes bittorrent
work so well.

everyone who is downloading is also uploading.

as has been pointed out before, there is the seeder -
persons who have the complete file. and there are the
leechers, who together make up the swarm.

when downloading, you are not only downloading from the
seeders but also from other leechers in the swarm who
already have bits that you don't. this is why bittorrent can
be really fast.

so this means that you'll also be uploading to other
leechers in your swarm while you yourself are still a
leecher (as you can see in Azureus - there's a downloadspeed
and next to it your uploadspeed for the torrent).

this also means that the more people are downloading/seeding
a torrent, the faster it will go for everyone.

when you've finished downloading a file, you simply stop
downloading and will keep on uploading as long as there are
people who are downloading and there are no other files that
need to be uploaded more urgently - don't worry, azureus
decides this for you (it keeps track of your download/upload
ratio for each torrent you have up).

have no uploads. thanks for explaining it for me.

my experience is that you're not constantly uploading - not
everyone needs the bits you have all of the time.

still nothing. :(

but their faq says:

"There is a 75.000 users limit. When that number is
reached we stop accepting new members. Accounts inactive for
more than 42 days are automatically deleted, so keep trying.
(There is no reservation or queuing system, don't ask for
that.)"

i'm also trying to get the first 2 episodes of "survivors" -
remember that? well i don't! anyway i saw an advert for it
on a blake's 7 video and it looks quite good. some old
sci-fi where 90% of the earths population have died and its
up to the remaining people to keep the civilisation going
etc. just come out on dvd, must be from arounf early 80s.

also, remember day of the triffids is out on dvd on monday!
:) the cheapest ive seen it at is £9-49 at dvd.co.uk.

i think emule is coming to the end of its usefulness, there
is so much just on uknova it will keep me busy for weeks!
:)

episide 11 is the first "single" epidoe they had listed, 1-9
come in a big pack altogether and i dont have the space for
a 3 GB file!

AH! but this is where azureus is handy!

you can select which files azureus is to download from
within a torrent. you open the torrent, then open up
details. these details appear in a new tab, and theres a
seperate tab that lists the files. you can then right-click
on a file and "deselect" it as it were.

only thing is, azureus immediately allocates the complete
space for the whole torrent, so it's no help at all to you,
because it would still take up 3 Gb of space until you had
downloaded the episode you'd want. :(

it's also 9.99 at play.com.

I just looked at those "survivors" dvd's - never heard of
it. looks interesting though, by good old Terry Nation.

have you ever seen this? I bought it a while ago
- it's quite good. :)
