 | There's an old Zippy the Pinhead cartoon where he's walking around with that on a protest sign. It recently occurred to
 me that it's actually true.

Modern Easter Island has few trees. The island once
possessed a forest of palms, but it is thought that the
native Easter Islanders completely deforested the island in
the process of erecting their statues, as well as
constructing fishing boats and buildings. There is evidence
that the disappearance of the island's trees coincided with
the collapse of the Easter Island civilization. Midden
contents from that time period show a sudden drop in
quantity of fish and bird bones as the islanders lost the
means to construct fishing vessels and the birds lost their
nesting sites. Chickens and rats became leading items of
diet. There is also some evidence of cannibalism, from human
 remains.

It looks like we're going the same way with oil
 instead of trees.

 | The consequences of this are hard to overstate. Oil fuels 95 percent of all transportation and a significant portion
of global food production. Industrial societies are
dependent on a vast, steady flow of inexpensive petroleum
for just about everything we make and do. Disrupt this flow,
and modern society as we know it is inconceivable.

 | Did you know they are bottle-brush drilling the Ghawar oil field in Saudi Arabia? That's where they drill a long
slanting/horizontal bore and drill bores radiating off from
it, then pump in water that forces up the oil. It's a last
act of desperate stupidity because it destroys the oilfield
and renders some of the oil unrecoverable.

If Ghawar is peaking now or is about to peak, we're all so
fucked it's not funny at all. Human civilization has no plan
 B. We don't have a plan C, D, E or F either. Goodbye to
 transportation, agriculture, food production, medicine,
 affordable high-tech gadgets, telecommunications, the
 future.

 | My science teacher in highschool told me with current methods they extract 25% of the oil in the field, and that
it is just too expensive to extract the rest. So the price
will just rise until the cost is worth the payout. He said
this is what happened with the oil crunch in the 70's or
whenever, they just had to switch over to a more expensive
method of extraction. I don't know if that's true at all or
 anything.

 | See, you're thinking of "expense" in terms of money. You need to think in terms of energy - joules, watts,
kilocalories, whatever. When it costs more than the energy
in one existing barrel of oil to pump one new barrel of
 oil...

I had the same argument with a co-worker who couldn't be
made to see that oil at $500 a barrel has no more energy
(i.e., intrinsic value) than oil at $20.00 a barrel.

 | Ah yeah, that's true. I was aware of this in the case of Canada where there are vast reserves but the-- I forget the
exact term, you know, you would expend more energy
extracting the oil than you would get from the oil itself.
