can anyone suggest a reliable, free program to convert WAV to MP3? I've been using the convert file device in musicmatch jukebox but i've never really liked it and recently it stopped working. now if i try to convert files with it, it has gets a C++ runtime error and shuts down..?
thanks!

:: copies and pastes the standard advice ::
The best mp3 encoder is Lame, with the RazorLame interface.
Best encoding options:
"--alt-preset standard"
And to get wav files off CD use EAC which gives you error free files (unless you've sandpapered your CDs).
EAC can also encode the files to MP3 using the Lame encoder but I prefer to do it in two steps because I am obsessive compulsive.

I'm looking for some software that'll go through my mp3s and update the ID3 tags, and rename the files based on that.
i've found several cheap (but not free) programs, and one free program that seem to do an ok job of it.
but, i'm wondering what's gonna be the best option.

the best option in my opinion is to illegally download some software without paying for it and use that

forgive me my ignorance, but what's the difference between 'alt-preset standard' and 'alt-preset-extreme'?
and why do you think the first option is better?

hey when you set up that program, it asks about backing up the files... what does it back up exactly? the whole mp3 or just the tag? i don't want to run it if it's going to double up all my music.

Lossless audio compression format This one maintains CD quality in a format that is a bit larger than the average MP3 along the lines of 256kbps. Other than that, it's the best format i've ever seen for quality and the other bonus is the extension on the music files is .APE
proof of monkey dominance

fuck monkeys audio, FLAC is far better also if you are going lossy i would recomend the aotuv tuning of oggvorbis, his previous tunings was adopted into the official vorbis source, which just shows how good it is.
and finally if you insist on mp3, listen to the others on here and use LAME with an --alt-preset
get something from here http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html the LamedropXPd is based onthe consept of oggdropxp and makes it dead simple.
or razorlame or whatever would be fine.

also yes EAC is the best but honestly if your ripping direct to a lossy format you are wasting your time with EAC.
if you are going to do it, do it right, and use EAC in secure mode with the correct read offset of your drive and rip directly to compliant cue sheets with single file flacs.
then you can load the cue sheet into foobar2000 and diskwrite to single-file-per-song lossy tracks all you want and you always have your perfect exact flac rip .

I would only recommend ripping to single files w/ cue sheets if you are ripping mixed cd's
for cd's with gaps, separate files is the way to go...

no thats terribly wrong. with my method i can recreate (bit for bit) the original cd so long as i account for both reading and writing drive offsets.
your method it becomes a mess. the cue sheet represents all the data within the original cd's TOC including gaps and pregaps.

by the way what does mixcds/tracks that runtogether/tracks with gaps. have to do with weather you use single file per cd or single file per track? what your audio format doesnt support gapless playback? sounds like you are using an inferior audio format my friend.

also please keep in mind that we are talking about flac (or other lossless compression) + cue sheets, so this is mostly like for archival purposes, while i do listen to my flacs using the cue sheets in foobar (which treats every track as a sperate song), a lot of times i will mass transcode to ogg as seperate files and burn to a cdr for listening to at work or whatever.
the idea behind flac+cue is not so much the superior audio quality as it is the forward-compatable, never-have-to-rip again idea. i have retained all the data in the original cd, so now forever more i can create files to listen to in whatever format i want.
so ripping to single-song-file flacs is a really stupid idea as far as im concerned.

I format my files for consumption on file sharing networks and ease of use on the computer or portable devices, in accordinace with most rip-group standards. I don't rip them so that I can burn them back to cd later.
I only rip with one track (like the rip groups) when the tracks flow together because then you don't need gapless plugins.
