Do you love dub?
Perhaps you merely 'like' dub?
Do you dislike dub?
Do you rub a dub dub?

disliked.

It's more like an electronic kind of reggae. The signature
thing is "dub delay/echo", usually a spring delay and
usually a fairly repetative bassline that is present
throughout most of the track. Do a P2P on king tubby, lee
perry, mad professor or scientist. Original tracks were
remixes/mashups of other tracks, eg new rhythm track or
vocals, etc. Often uses "real" instruments (bass guitars,
drums, etc.), but you get the odd synth in there too.

IMO, trip hop and illbient were both born out of dub.

I'd say, "The bastard offspring of brass bands and punk". My
cousins (who are mods- as in the scooter riders, not forum
oderators :-) are into it. Punk with horns.

Only well know Ska track I can think of is "The impression
that I get" by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

Dub started in jamaican radio studios. Dub stands for
"overdub" where sounds and effects were added to recording
by radio dj's the original Turntablists.

Ska also started in Jamaica decades ago.

dub is a bit like reggae with no or very little lyrics.
it's usually got some kind of marijuana connotations and is
very mellow and repetetive and good to get stoned to. very
deep basslines and lots of reggae type echos all over the
place.

there is also electronic dub like rhythm and sound and fenin
etc, which are also similar to the above, but done on synths
etc. and usually not so many weed references.

i like both, but prefer true, old style dub.

I like music without lyrics.

Mad Proff had an MC with him, but luckily he just added the
occasional fill and "ahh yah" Nothing better than an MC who
isn't too over bearing.

I have a Mad Proff set where he plays with Lee Scratch Perry
and LSP doesn't stop jammin for 2 hours!!! Its just like
LEEEEE shut up!

hah im just listening to black uhuru when i saw this
thread,
"solidarity" just gotta love it

i used to download loads of dub from napster,
but the best things were the ones i bought 10 years ago,
like black uhuru in dub and the mad proffessor ones.

in general i prefer the dub versions from reggae songs over
dub tracks, cant really tell why

on one of the mad professors there was sort of a drum and
bass track, which has been the first thing i heard in this
direction and that opened another door

this music really is made for big soundsytems, where the
bass steadily moves you around like the waves of the
ocean...

Yes, I like dub very much.

Dub reggae (old and new) and especially dub techno work for
me. I mainly listen to it at home, generally when i'm
working. Much like ambient music, you can either absorb
yourself in the sounds, or simply use it as background music
for when you need to concentrate on other things. This is
the beauty of mellow, repetitive music.

corn fish dub is the version for that song I believe. it's
on arkology reel 3, last track.

on topic, i love dub, but only when I'm in the right mood.
I've been looking for some really smoky, trippy dub for a
while now but all I can find is either old-style dub or
techno-dub, neither of which have the quality I'm looking
for. I know of a couple tracks, like "bumper ball dub" off
of No Protection (Mad Prof vs. Massive Attack) or "Alter
Echo Dubtometry" from Dubtometry (by DJ Spooky, I think with
Lee Perry). Anyone know of any really smoky, laidback,
druggy dub that I could mellow out to? basically i want to
feel like i'm high but i don't have any weed.

matisyahu did an album with dub versions of a bunch of his
stuff. i know matisyahu is kind of knobbish, but some of it
is actually pretty good new-school dub

Dj Spooky?

I think I've heard his stuff.

So it's about hiphop?

But what about the 'ill', and what's the 'bient' has got to
do with it?

Connections with ambient? I can't stop thinking of some sort
of dark, ill, eerie ambient:ish something. With a beat,
perhaps
