breakbeat does not have dominant bass-lines. d'n'b does.

Are we sitting comfortably....yes?..then I'll begin...

Breakbeat....as a genre refers to acts like Prodigy and a
lot of the early Rave acts 90/91/92/93, who used Breakbeat
Loops as the basis of their Rhythms...There was a little
processing/cutting up of breaks but generally the complete
loop would be used...very danceable...BPMS .. 130 -
160..perhaps higher...

DnB...a bit later, 94/95/96, a much "Blacker" sound, fusing
elements of Jamaican Reggae/dancehall, Raves Breakbeat
artists, Detroit Techno etc. into a new sound... mainly
focused on suprise suprise, Drums & Bass... The drums were
generally Breakbeats, cutup and rearranged into new rhythms,
much more creative use of breaks than the Breakbeat
cru..Also a lot faster 160-200BPM but with bassline running
at half that speed (i.e. you dance to the bass not the
drums).....Also lots of SUBSONIC bass, low-tuned 808
BDs...Artists like Photek, Roni Size, Dj Zinc etc...

Fat Boy Slim....does use breaks but his sound is a lot
slower than the standard Breakbeat artists... Generally
referred to as BIG BEAT - includes FBS, The Chemical
Bros...

Phew...

One thing to remember is that these names are really just
handy tags for jornalists etc..dance Music has a habit of
choosing nu names for each and every development even when a
lot of the styles are VERY similar and many artists/sounds
could fit into one or more genres/sub-genre...

i've got this cd by this group formaly known as bad compagny
and who now are called something with )|(E (can't pronuounce
it anyway), thought that was good drum 'n bass, i didn't
like photek, roni size i thought to be to jungle and
therefor not minimalistic enough

A lot of these musical styles can also be seperated by the
drug of choice of the scene in question...

BreakB....EEEEEEEE..speed
Big Beat....EEE & lager...
Jungle...Weed...e (but don't tell anyone)..
DnB....Weed...Coke...e/speed(but pretend it's coke)..
UK Garage...Coke, Coke, Coke & Coke...

I'm sure someones done a Thesis on this...(perhaps good old
Sadie Plant..On Drugs...perhaps...ps. Sadie, if you are
reading this, fancy a date sometime?..you made me equate
Intelligence=Sexiness...even tho I've never seen you, & I'm
a ugly charmless old fuck..let me know ok..)..

....always worth a try...;)
