album of the issue: boards of canada
geogaddi (warp)

"self-plagiarism is style." - alfred hitchcock
"yellow!" - boards of canada, 'alpha & omega'

the seemingly endless parade of boc-wannabes that have
surfaced since 1998's landmark music has the right to
children have obviously left us all clamoring for the real
thing. as such, (and with the possible exception of drukqs
duly noted) it's not unreasonable to suggest that geogaddi
is the most highly-anticipated electronic record of all
time. does it live up to the promise? depends.

whether or not you consider this 65-minute stunner a success
will largely depend on what you might've been expecting from
geogaddi. the harsh truth is that no track here will
immediately sound as utterly mind-bending as, say,
'aquarius' or 'roygbiv' might have on first blush, but that
is merely a crime of context. if you find this record
disappointing, it will only be because you've tasted this
recipe (children's voices, seaside washes, analog basslines)
once before.

and make no mistake about it: with its mangled samples,
filtered synths and somnolent interludes, geogaddi is
undeniably cut from the same cloth as its predecessor.
fortunately, there's enough genius and innovation here to
warrant the wait. 'music is math' delivers a typically
clever chord progression before yielding to some mulched-up
beats and an eerie vocoded coda; 'julie and candy' morphs
instantaneously from a carnivalesque dream piece to a
psychedelic stomper; the brilliant '1969' braids about six
ideas into one track, culminating in a torrid bliss of some
analog whirlygigging, a young girl's atonal refrain and the
best exhortation this side of "yeah... that's right!" -
"1969 in the sunshine." we could go on from there, but in
the interest of brevity... suffiice to say that there are
many treasures to be gleaned from this glorious record.

much like in a beautiful place out in the country, geogaddi
yields its most substantial rewards after lengthy
consideration. that m

part two:that means it'll take at least five full listens
for this record to properly seep in; once it does, it'll
co-exist with your subconscious in that same, curious way
that boards of canada records tend to do. and you'll love
it.

until then, go easy on them; they clearly know what they're
doing.

of all time...
I have listened to the whole thing twice already and I have
already picked out fav's....but as with all BOC
material...Tommorow I will hear different effects and noises
that I did not hear tonight...and fall in love all over
again...

My summer romance has come early.....

Yeah I agree, Boards are the greatest!

Twoism, and Boc Maxima (put togheter on one CD) was my
summer theme in 2001 :)

BOC are so nostalgic it aint even funny ;)

I heard Arovanes Tides album......I liked it but some tracks
was just straight BOC rips.

Geogaddi is my fav album at the moment.

I think one of BOCs strength is the longevity of their
releases, its just so hard to get tired of their albums.
They just grow and grow and grow......

I mean I got MHTRTC in 98 and I just cant get enought of it.

"They want their music to be listenable, to be a pleasurable
experience, but one in which, if you choose to delve deeper,
the rewards are there to be had."

From a BOC interview -

"For us the aim is to try and make something that you like
instantly, but the important thing is actually the hidden
mystery hypnotism that happens after ten listens."

"Its almost like bait," Sandison joins in. "You disguise a
track as a nice big juicy worm, and then put a hook inside
it! There is almost a critical point, a threshold, and if
you get past that, then you are going to be completely
immersed in what we are doing musically. We always assume
that the listener is the most intelligent person imaginable.
If you always think like that, you never insult the
listener, and someone wanting to analyse what we do will
always get something out of it."
