do you think its really damaging the artist?
or it is just bad for the record labels?
do you usually download?
i dont use to but not for an etic question it is just that i
like having the originals

interesting question, nacmat. most of the stuff i downloaded
and i actually liked, i brought afterwards. and, btw, a
label like rephlex needs people who buy their releases.
otherwise, there would be only mainstream stuff around. so,
i think, one should support small, innovative and cool
labels like rephlex...

yeah, totally. i guess every release and sold record is kind
of important to rephlex, so its quite a fuck off to download
rephlex stuff really.

I use MP3s to listen to stuff I wouldn't normally be able to
afford...and then if I like it, I'll buy it...

No-one is really losing here...and in fact, I think it
encourages artists to keep their qulaity control high...if
it's shite I ain't gonna buy it, whereas previously I'd
quite often buy things on the off-chance and be
dissapointed...perhaps this might lead some artists to
become stuck in a creative rut, producing stuff they know
would be populart but when you get that sort of thinking, I
really don't feel people like that are Artists
anyway...)...

This kinda evens the relationship up between me as a buyer
and the record company as the seller...

I would like to see the ability to buy tracks directly from
the artists, bypassing the RC entierly...I think thats where
the future is headed, the Inet doing it's job of cutting out
the middle man (DISINTERMEDIATION...oooohh..long word,
simple concept...)..

I have quite a few AFX MP3s I wouldn't have been able to get
any other way - unreleased stuff, outofprint vinyl etc...but
I feel I've given RDJ enough cash over the years that I'm
sure he's not too worried about it...)...

(And yeah, I also use MP3 to have a more convinient format
for listening to my CDs...I guess no-one would have any
problem with that...)...

The truth is... artists get royalties on CDs sold to
stores... not to individual people. SO - its fine to
download MP3's of artist you like. If you REALLY like
someones music youd probably buy it anyway.. or atleast I
do, if I really love it.

I download a lot of music, but sometimes I buy it too, I
dont think of it as me losing 15 dollars on something I
could have gotten for free... Its cool.

Also, if the artists is independant they get money from
individual CD's so its probably better to buy their stuff no
matter what.....

more.... there are some great mp3 ftp sites..

I download quite a few mp3s. I buy the albums that I like
(and that I can actually find.) High import prices and
"incomplete" releases (the American distributors of Warp are
particularly guilty of that) really annoy me. I'd rather tip
the artist directly. Hopefully we'll get to that point soon.

The ONLY IDM (dumb term, but you know what I mean...) CDs I
have are Drukqs and RDJ, and it may stay that way.

I'd rather have the actual, official albums... but I can't
afford them. I'm broke. (that may have to do with not having
a JOB, but I digress...)

Whether or not it's wrong, I couldn't care less, I only live
once, and I'm not wasting cash on music I can get for free.
Maybe in a few years, when I've got the DeNiro, I'll start
collecting albums, but I can't do it right now.

I spent thousands on alternative rock and metal CDs, and I
regret that... but that was before the MP3 revolution, I
surely wouldn't of bought them if I had a computer at the
time. And I wasn't going to tape them off someone, I despise
cassettes. :-D

Take Opheck's post, change the fact that I do have a job,
and that's exactly what I think :o)
