I guess thats true, I'm just suspicious he releases
everything he makes.
Its most obvious with his work than others, the blatant use
of track recycling in other tracks.

I suppose if AE or RDJ put out everything they made they'd
be giving him a run for their money as well. Hell, at 10g's
a rekkid, this guy definitely doesnt need a day job.

Snares is going to have to seriously pull his finger out in
2005. A decline started after HCCBU and he hasn't picked up
since, for me at least. I'm not asking anything special
either. I just want him to do what he does best, which he
hasn't done for months now.

Let's all go round his place and threat to microwave his

HCCBU was definitely a (heh heh) HUGE departure from what
most think is "what he does best." To be honest I think it
was his most brilliant album to date, one of the best of
last year actually. Its obvious that he spent much more
time developing that one than his other work.

I feel this gabber core, rapid dry snare hit shit is getting
somewhat tired, and that is why so many of his albums are
beginning to sound so similar, minus the supplemental gimmic
thrown in here or there: ala "here's a violin and some
orchestral instruments, now it's an entirely 'new' snares
sound, and thus a new snares album!"

Bullshit. When I first read about this album being
"ambient" of sorts, I was actually impressed for a moment.
If snares actually took the time out to make a well thought
out BEATLESS album, then he'd actually be challenging
himself and his listeners.

Until then....

I agree, I've thought about a beatless Snares album too. And
it's not as if he hasn't dabbled with soundscapes before.

offline shibumi from United States on 2005-03-16 13:36 [#01535289]
Points: 359 Status: Lurker

Hmmm, well, there's aquite a few tracks on here with almost
no percussion or no percussion at all. Which I think is a
HUGE departure from what he's known for, and what's more,
they are actually really beautiful.

Whichever one has the guitar harmonics is one that most
directly springs to mind.

offline gl0tch from www.gl0tch.com     on 2005-03-16 13:45 [#01535298]
Points: 2708 Status: Lurker

HCCBU started with a beatless track.
But, I guess there's a difference between interludes and a
full blown soundscape / ambient record. One such interlude
track that comes to mind on Rossz sounded suspiciously
familiar to a Bjork track off of Vespertine.

offline shibumi from United States on 2005-03-16 13:49 [#01535302]
Points: 359 Status: Lurker

I don't know - I get what you're saying gl0tch and I do
agree that I tend to like HCCBU and WITBOAS more than his
other stuff (contrary to why most people seem to like
snares).

At the same time, this album almost sounds like a modern
classical album with elements of electronic music rather
than an electronic album with elements of classical music.

So, like, maybe a comparison between this at HCCBU isn't
really fair

oh yeah, wtf is modern classical shibumi. You oxymoron you.

offline gl0tch from www.gl0tch.com     on 2005-03-16 14:13 [#01535321]
Points: 2708 Status: Lurker

Understood and Agreed.

Rossz is a GOOD album when compared to his other releases,
towards which this still sounds similar AND perhaps
represents an apex of this signature style. So... I agree,
its somewhat classical and a classic in terms of it being a
culmination of several attempts leading to up to this. The
question is though, what's next?

I've been thinking about this recently with all the
(supposively) 'great' new music coming out recently - NIN,
Mars Volta, Snares, Autechre, Analord, etc. There should
be distinction between new and recent in
terms of releases. Most of these recent tracks
aren't quite new sounding, relatively speaking,
esp. when compared to the releases beforehand. Many of
the artists out there lately have been releasing music that
could have been included in their albums that came out
nearly 5+ years ago.

Just my .02

offline shibumi from United States on 2005-03-16 14:36 [#01535337]
Points: 359 Status: Lurker

yeah yeah, i know EXACTLY what you mean.

Hmmm, maybe this deserves another topic. It seems like with
electronic artists especially there's this trend where the
first couple of releases by some artists establish a
completely NEW type of sound and then later releases tend to
be derivative of that. Maybe Aphex is the one exception
because it seems like with every release (for the most
part), he presents a different side of his sound.

my 02 pence ;-)

I thought Autechre was on that kick too, then Untilted came
out and I thought I was hearing outtakes from like 4
different albums.
