How popular is Squarepusher?

There was a similar thread about Aphex Twin, but I'm really
curious about how rich Squarepusher is, and how popular he
is overall. Is he a powerful asset for Warp?

opinions on him please see here.

I think everyone dislikes him now. I hardly ever listen.
Pretty boring.

I think he's a wicked artist; very musical and a virtuoso in
both programming and bass guitar/drums.

Anyway, that's not what this is about: is he popular? Or
pretty obscure against artists like Aphex Twin?

Not sure where all this dislike is coming from, just because
he pushed pomme? Crazy. Really liked Ultravisitor and Tundra
and lookin forward to more myself!

well, he's my favourite warp idm artist now that i'm not
that much into idm anymore...

and he's popular enough to be on the shelves at the
electronic section of popular record stores.

offline Sire from the depths (Finland) on 2005-03-10 08:57 [#01528108]

He's fairly popular outside the typical electronic music
circles because of his bass skills I think, many people I
know who play in bands (they still exist, surprisingly
enough) are aware of him but not Aphex, Autechre etc..

relax people that map SUX and it's not real, since whole
countries are missing. i found it by image search and didn't
check it's quality.

don't you think I drew that myself.

it's silly that people hate on things because they either
don't understand or are jealous of their success.

disliking things and stating your opinion is one thing, but
consistently replying to a topic about something you dislike
just for the sake of wasting energy reflects greatly upon
your personality.

I reckon he deserves all the popularity he gets-his music
just sounds so confident and assured.

On a side point, is it true he was a heroin addict, or is
that some made up rumour?

I'm not really concerned about how popular he is. I think
he's kind of gone off in an odd direction lately. IMHO,
Selection Sixteen was probably his final respectable work.
Still, nothing tops Feed Me Weird Things, though the
dub-style works from Music is Rotted One Note and Budakhan
Mindphone are pretty nice too.

this is an urban legend now

" I met Squarepusher.

What A Fucking Asshole.

So, he played a show in my city last night. I saw him over
by the bar standing by himself, so I thought, Oh cool,
Tom Jenkinson, I'll go say hello.

So I went up to him and said, "Hi, just wanted to say I'm a
big fan and I appreciate you coming here to play, looking
foward to your set tonight". Then he said, "Yeah, thanks.."
and shook my hand. I could tell he didn't want to be
bothered or anything so I was about to just walk off, then
I
remembered I had my camera with me, and I'd hate it if I
didn't get an up-close and personal pic of Squarepusher, so
I said, "Oh hey, do you mind if I take a quick picture
please?" - holding out the camera.

He said, "no".
Ok, so you're thinking like me, right? like 'no I don't
mind'. So I hold up the camera to take a picture and
he's all like "NOOO!" and pushes the camera away, then
says,
"Fuck You!" then shoves me. As I'm being shoved by
Squarepusher I say, "Well fuck you!" and pushed his
extended
arm away from me, and stepped back into place right in
front
of him (just a gut-reaction). Then he said, "I said no, I
fucking mean, no!"

By this time everyone standing around us is staring.
Everyone that can tell what's going on has the same look on
their face as me, which is a combination wtf/lol
face. So I'm looking around at all these other people who,
understandably, can't believe what they're seeing, then I
just snapped into it and realized how rediculous it was.

Then I laughed and said, "Jesus Christ, sorry asshole.."
and
walked off."
