to me, it is answered, but i am sure i did a lousy job of
explaining my position. and even then, i don't expect
anyone to be inclined to agree. sorry i couldn't help you
arrive at your own conclusion, but hopefully you will one
day.

no, you explained it quite well infact, always nice to read
your opinion!

"entertainment is like the equivalent of shutting
your mind off and art is generally something that provokes
reaction."

what sort of reaction did you have in mind?
and also, doesn't every individual percepts those things
different?

1. all sorts of reactions - every sort. big, small...
there's no guidelines. i'm thinking in very broad terms.

2. yes, everyone's perception is different. it doesn't
matter how something is percieved.

i'd say music is art when it is inspired, created, and
presented.

we know what music is, don't we...

i understand why we can wonder if it's art or not, but by
doing this somehow we're trying to surrender to the
dictature of words, classifications and precise definitions
rather than to listen at what our hearts tell us. and music
is something that touches our hearts, not just fucking math
despite what some people want to believe (in my opinion at
least).

classifying almost always apoverishes/simplifies the thing
we're trying to classify. some things are unclassifiable,
why not just accept it?

and now we're trying to find out whether music, which
expresses by itself better than any words or definitions can
(you know some feelings or ideas are better expressed with a
picture, a movie, a piece of music, etc. than with
words...), can fit in the "art" category which is not even
defined! don't you think it's a bit absurd? : )

haha, yes, i agree with you completly.. i couldn't care less
if a piece of music is considered art or not, if it's
something i like, i'll listen to it and enjoy it no matter
what..
but for instance, when it comes to that governament support
for certain artists - who are they to judge on who deserves
the artistic status and who doesn't..i was more interested
in it from that perspective..but yes, i suppose this
question really is absurd.

we have some government-funded art galleries here... they
are censored whenever somebody is offended by the art.

you'd be surprised (in a bad way) to hear music from some
artists our governament funds..

well, how would a government be able to tell which projects
to fund? a bunch of politicians decide? or they have a
"committee"?

i think they have a committee, yes.. they also give out
several cultural awards every year, mostly named after
famous poets and writers, so i suppose you need a few of
those to get picked for governament funding..but people in
those committees have no taste in music :D
