would you stop sleeping if you could stay awake forever due
to a revolutionary pill or something?

I'd be happier asleep, I keep having these dreams that spill
over into the waking hours, emotions that linger like
failing fragrance, and I think, mournfully, which state is
richer, where am I happier?

i love the comfort of the bed too much for that...

if it could magically have no negative side-effects, i
probably would. it would be like adding on a third to your
lifespan.

Well if you didn't need to sleep and had no desire to then
yes I would stop the whole sleeping business. Although I
would only use the extra hours to do fun things.

your whole daily structure would change. you wouldn't need
time to wake up or fall asleep. you could take a vacation
or travel for 16 hours and still go to work for eight. you
would enjoy more of life without the restraints of having to
have to go to sleep at a certain time or place.

but I like falling asleep. waking up a bit less, but
that only speaks for my love of sleep.

I like being out of it now and then eventhough it's
not as conscious as I make it sound now.

It would be handy now and then, but I love sleeping. If I
could have a nice nap instead of all the time I waste
watching TV or on the internet, I would. The only reason I
don't is to increase the sleeptacular impact of my night
sleep.

Slowly drifting off to barely audible music is also
loveliness.

now that i think about it again, this cough drop tastes like
wine and i can see why sleep is grand. but how do we know
that the only reason we love sleep isn't because our bodies
are tired? the great feeling when we start going to sleep
is because we're finally resting. but this pill would
defeat any trace of sleepiness or weariness. so you have to
imagine always feeling in tip-top perfect condition, ready
to take on the world 24/7.

unless you're saying you like being unconcious so that you
don't have to deal with things in waking life. many people
feel that way, but that's a different story.

you need downtime, just like you can't be happy all the
time.

you need contrast.

but to come back to your last arguments - I think you see
sleep too much as just a physical process. it is just that,
but it also influences emotional processes immensely.

sleep and the need for sleep is a natural process to deal
with human emotions, therefore with being human.

to me it's just too much a part of life.

ok, that makes sense to me. i think you may be right about
that. i was thinking about it in a more limited scope.

id never take that pill. i have spent many night tweaked out
of my gourd, not able to sleep and bored as fuck. maybe it
would be different if everyone else was awake too, but
still, sleep feels too good
