undeniably he was a superb craftsman. but something always
refrains me from hailing his work as 'great'. like picasso,
or bacon, or el greco...

find a word to express this "something" you say
maybe the "media"?

i would easily describe his stuff as being 'great'. so many
of his works just hit me head on and make me think "hooly
fuck".
great
great
great
great
great
great

one of the greatest. Pure imagination. And being ripped off
these days everywhere I might add: the film "Constantine",
the last world in the game "Mass Effect", etc etc.

He has a similar style to Frank Frazetta.

I like his ideas better than Frazetta. Same painting style
though
