trent reznor has a hard-on for it. and BT scored the
"Monster" movie in 5.1 from the ground up.

5.1 surround sound utizling all the channels at once imo is
not very good sounding and is designed for motion picture
sound. when watching a movie it usally sounds great cause
the center speaker is for dialogue in a movie.

Most of the 5.1 music i've heard sounds bad because they
barely utilize the 3d surround sound stage by focusing
everyone on the center front channel. For instance the
vocals will usually always be there and stay in the front
center.

I prefer Quad sound myself. Its an even balance and setup
for perfect 3d sound. No pesky 5th channel to offset the 3d
environemtn. Quad field recording with 4 mics is very fun to
do and to listen back to on 4 speakers

of course i really mean 4.1 , not 5.1 or quad . cause my
setup includes a subwoofer as well

There are some "wma9" demo files on microsoft's websites
that showcase the 5.1 sound. They sound bloody amazing.

You've mentioned that once ago...have You done a track in
Acid with 5.1 ? can You spam it ? i'd like to hear an
example...

well, the thing is that you'd need a soundcard with 5.1 out
to hear what it sounds like, so I've never done a track with
it, but we once tried it on my friends computer and it
worked great!

I could try to just do some tests without actually hearing
what I'm mixing exactly and encode and upload, but which
codec supports 5.1, and how do I encode to them?

I'll start on something right now.

ok. this should work, but I have no way of
checking as I don't have a dvd-burner nor digital
out/surround on my computer... it said wma should be able to
handle 5.1...

"but which

but if You do such a test let me know, i'll check it on my
5.1 system

well, it seems to be working. i can hear instruments from
each channel - but could YOu say which channel is which
instrument ?

well.. the main melody should be in the back, that sinewave
should just swirl all round, the triangle-ish sound should
be... in the midde on the right I think and so should the
snaredrum while the hihat should be in the middle on the
left... the bassdrum should be dead center.

I've got to run now, but the best way to figure out if it's
working is to just listen to the sine that should be flying
all over throughout the song... post back how it is...

doesn't work. I've got a THX 5.1 System with an Audigy2
card.

The audio codec mentions stereo 44kHz 160kbps

a friend and I remixed one of our collaborated tracks into a
full 5.1 mix this summer, using Nuendo 2.

the sounds splatter all over the place. we did use a pretty
good studio, though.

if you have the chance, it is great fun.

my housemate brought up a 4.1 speaker system, but we have no
hardware that plays 4.1 - what a prune.

ok. I'll try again with the ac3-codec, but I don't know what
can play that back...

first time i played Your wma test track yesterday it was
with winamp, but without the 5.1 plug-in installed, silly me
:) then i tried with faggin WinMedia Player 9 [ i use it for
5.1 dvd films ] - but still nothing....the central speaker
says nothing

hmm...

yeah, I checked the codec, and it just says "stereo." I've
been trying to find some way of exporting to 5.1, but the
ac3 (dolby digital) export thingie needs some serial number
to work, and I don't have that... none of the crack-ish
thingies worked either...

it's still somewhat grey area for us then .... :) after my
previous post i checked configs - restored audiocard
settings, uninstalled codecs etc.

i seriously consider creating a partition only for working
with sound/music . cause all that codec, avi/xvid/dvd stuff
just fucks up good settings and the media softs steal file
associations, configs bla bla. windows crap

after I finish the rest of todays "reading quota," I'll try
the other version where I have to export each channel as a
separate track, then put them into a second program to make
the surround file...

5.1 for music (especially electronic) is a dubious endevour
at best- adding a further layer of processing in order to
achieve a more intricate soudstage for something entirely
artificial (in the case of electronic) if a waste of time.
How do you evoke a psycho-acoustical effect for something
that does not exist? Its also unnecessary for 'performed'
music as 2 speakers/channels are plenty to reproduce the
'audience's' listening experience.

The psycho-acoustic effect works for moovies because the
enviroment is suggested by the images on the screen- the
rear channels placing the listener 'within' the action.

Tipper made a version of his album 'Surrounded' in 5.1. I
have the regular cd and its pretty cool, so the 5.1 probably
sounds great

What You say is theory, i think we're talking bout music
here = feeling music, rather. Creating a sound space which
helps YOu enjoy sounds a bit more sometimes. if it's "waste
of time" for You - fine.

but if You happen to know e.g Orbital - listen to "the
altogether" in audio version and then check the dvd version.

it just sounds nice, feels fine etc. great experience.

"How do you evoke a psycho-acoustical effect for something
that does not exist?" - not applicable.

I can only speak for the mix I have done and I can assure
you - it's very different from a stereo mix (if done right).

I'm thinking more about producing effects that are fun to
listen to.. like a sound that swirls all around the room
before zooming through the listener, disappearing into
obscurity in the background and then re-emerging at full
vigor... although all that'll have wait until I can hear
what I'm mixing in real 5.1... have to get a new comp with
optical out...
